In the novel, “Dangerous Liaisons” written by Choderlos De Laclos, during the 18th century it can be seen where characters are writing letters to one another. One of the characters, the Marquise de Merteuil is a wealthy widow who’s used to getting what she wants. She gains pleasure from getting revenge on her ex-boyfriend by creating problems between him and his fiancée, Cecile, and helping the Vicomte de Valmont plot against Madame de Tourvel. Although the Marquise is devious and ruthless as Valmont, her motivations are different. In society, a woman’s worth limits her, and she understood that men have it easy, “And pray, what have you done that I have no surpassed thousand times? You have seduced, ruined even, very women: but what difficulties have you had to overcome?” (183, letter 81) Followed by “For you men, a defeat is but one success the less. He receives pure gratification from seeing people give up anything valuable to them. He attends social events, for opportunities to test out his abilities for seducing and tarnishing women, and he's exceedingly good at it. Valmont could be seen an as genius in recognizing a person's motives and foresee what they'll do next, then uses that knowledge to manipulate them. Valmont's weakness is Madame de Merteuil, he sacrifices a lot in order to stay in her good graces because they're partners in crime. Valmont is aware that she has many lovers, but it doesn’t seem to bother him because he believes that he’s the only one who can satisfy her needs. Since he’s a wealthy man of high social standing, he feels entitled to have what he wants. Although his reputation is unpleasant, he’s considered a free man.
