Top selling, and currently in top ten for adult pop hits, Christina Perri’s song “Human” released in November of 2013. Her premise is we are all just simply physical being’s, enduring, and handling only so much. Her music video strives to embody humanistic qualities yet throw an ironic twist by using parts of her, appearing to be bionic. She struggles with moving, feeling and experiencing her “world” while evident to be made of machine parts, but overcomes as she becomes human and must endure all that comes with humanity whether that be pain or joy. Utilizing severe lighting shifts, camera angles, and strategic props, Christina Perri in her music video “Human” conveys that being simply physically human, despite all the heartache and conflict, …show more content…
These close-up shots reinforce the stillness and perfection of her posture that force us to question the integrity of her humanity. The quick camera shifts to specific machinery that mirror real human organs reveal a correlation that these robotic organs are actually inside Perri (Figure 3). Later, Perri steps off the platform, insinuating she is slowly breaking free of her prison as the camera blinks from all around her showing the same movement of her simply walking. The shots from the camera and her physical movement both display supreme simplicity that can be traced back to the mechanics of a machine. This reiterates her robotic like nature, nevertheless, she continues learning how to be truly human and attempting to break free. As the chorus picks up, the camera angle shots do as well. The shots complement the crescendo’s and musicality woven in the song and this brings an analogous sense to the video despite the growing tension and conflict within Perri. The constant switching of angles near the end give a sense of confusion, hinting that being human means dealing with conflict which can be puzzling at times, but being truly human ultimately offers freedom and
The song I picked for this homework assignment is called Runaway Love by Ludacris and Mary J. Blige. The song is describing the hardships of three young girls and their struggle to survive. Finally, the girls are fed up with the lives they are forced to live and decide to pack up their things and run away. I think this song can relate to many aspects of sociology that we have learned in class. Some examples shown through the song are poverty, education, healthcare, marriage and family. All three girls’ different stories and struggles they face.
Barbara Shreisand and Celine Dion, which are two of the most popular singers of all time, decided to join forces back in 1997 to sing one of the most beautiful duets of all time. They sang a song called "Tell Him." They showed the world how talented they were by singing that song.
Black consciousness has awoken the black community, and has forced us to revolt against the injustice that constantly live through. From the civil rights movement being expressed through Nina Simone’s songs to the black lives matter movement being lived and sung by Solange Knowles these artists are strong activist for the issues in their time period. The song “F.U.B.U” song by Solange has a deeper meaning than just revolting against isolation. While listening to the song thoroughly in the second verse of “F.U.B.U” by Solange she sings strongly about who she wrote the song for, she sings, “All my niggas let the whole world know
This song “Respect” by Aretha Franklin sheds light upon the topic of Women having equal rights as men.
The video promotes a realistic portrayal of women while undermining negative societal expectations put to those women. Furthermore, the message behind it, one calling people to accept themselves and to not feel the need to strive towards unreachable goals set by the media, can be applied to the lives of not only women but men as well. While the song was obviously meant for women, it is still holds the important message for people of any gender, age, or race to understand that being true to and learning to accept one’s self can only lead to positive
“Fire away. Take your best shot, show me what you got. Honey I’m not afraid (Chris, Lines 4-5)…” Strength, love, heartache, all words that many people can identify with, but what about mental illness, depression, and suicide. These words are those that humans avoid, pretend they are not there, but in reality those three words effect many more people that was ever thought possible. Over 18.2% of United States citizens suffer from a mental illness (Depression), 6.7% of United States citizens suffer from depression (Depression), and each year in the United States there are on average 42,773 deaths by suicide (American). Now, many people can relate to the words love and heartbreak, but many more can identify with the three words that the world
On December 13, 2013 Beyoncé - who was named by the Time magazine as the most influential person of the year 2014 - unexpectedly released a self-titled visual album that went viral on the Internet, that is, it debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, and sold 828,773 electronic copies in three days becoming the fastest-selling album in iTunes Store history. After the release of the album the artist posted coupe of videos where she was walking her fans through her songs and music videos in the album explaining what was intention and the idea behind each song. In one of those videos she speaks about how she was looking for some videos on feminism on YouTube, and when she saw a TEDx video from Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie talking about feminism, Beyoncé decided to use it for her new single – Flawless - as in her opinion the music and the Adichie’s video suited very well with each other. By the end of the explanatory video she talks about ‘imperfection’ and embracing one’s imperfections, which she links to her another single Pretty Hurts. This song features the issues of sexual objectification of female bodies and the culture of perfection where women are valued only for their beauty. In another explanatory video she talks about owning her sexuality and body, especially after her pregnancy. As she explains it was her joy and her confidence that allowed her to show her body to the public. In the video she mentions that she is very well aware of the fact that she is showing her body, and that she is doing this partly for other women as well to empower them, and give them an example that you can own your body and your sexuality, even after body goes into a lot of transformations during pregnancy.
A Mad Girl’s Love Song In Sylvia Plath’s poem “A Mad Girl’s Love Song”, it is hard to determine whether the speaker is mad or going mad. Plath, along with all women in this time period, were defined by their relationship to a man. When a woman was abandoned by her beloved, it was Earth-shattering, as it still can be for many women today. Before the reader even gets into the poem itself, the speaker is already described as “mad” and this word has multiple connotations.
Performance artist Patty Chang creates pieces that deal with scopophilia or voyeurism, best described as “the love of looking”, a topic that goes hand in hand with the issues of gender roles in society that Chang also represents in her work. Chang particularly addresses issues of gender roles through her confrontation of female representation in art, film and popular culture as a whole. In Chang’s video clip entitled, “Shaved (At a Loss)”, she sits herself on a chair in front of her audience, hikes up her dress to expose her vagina and then proceeds to, very roughly, shave off her pubic hair. The entire duration of “Shaved (At a Loss), Chang is blindfolded. In this piece Chang presents consumer culture’s fetishization of the ”flawless” female figure, which is outlined by the unattainable body ideals that are portrayed not only in most mainstream pornography, but also in almost all media connected to our society’s popular culture sphere.
‘’The woman thing’’ by Audre Lorde reflects more on her life as a woman, this poem relates to the writers work and also has the theme of feminism attached it. The writers role in this poem is to help the women in discovering their womanhood just as the title say’s ‘’the woman thing.’’ The poem is free verse and doesn’t have a rhyme to it and has twenty-five lines.
Before the songstress appeared on the pop scene, the name “Madonna” was used in reference to the Christian Mother of God. The original “Madonna” was the symbol of Roman Catholicism and Western Christianity. Madonna the entertainer however proved she was unlike this original female figure. She violated all the innocent icons of religion and femininity and by using the phrase “like a virgin” she began a long string of inserting religious, political and sexual references into the world of pop music.
Rap music has given me personally something to look up to. Not a role model but hope of continuing my dreams because rappers successfully made it. “For what’s money without happiness, or hard times without the people you love” is from a song called “Love Yourz” by J. Cole. He clearly understands how there is “beauty in the struggle and ugliness in the success” because he’s lived that life. Other songs such as “2Face” or “The Autograph” were instantly relatable to me because he has been through several struggles from the beginning of his childhood. Cole’s father left when he was six leaving his mother and younger brother alone. Cole became “the man of the house” but becoming a rapper is not as easy as it seems. Cole’s messages in these two songs are relative because I too, have had several issues with my mother and father creating a sense of lonesome. Hearing music like Coles helped me overcome my
All around the word there have been many cases of bullying, some that were prevented and some that ended in a tragedy such as death. The song “Mean,” by Taylor Swift is effective in using metaphor, similes, and symbolism to promote the prevention of bullying by letting everyone know to never let anyone push you around and to always stand up for your self. This song was written because, Taylor swift herself was bullied by Bob Lefsetz, a critic who heard her song, "did Taylor Swift kill her career overnight?…Taylor 's too young and dumb to understand the mistake she made.” This are the types of comments that can cause a person to feel worthless and untalented. We can see that no matter what age you are there’s always the possibility of getting
Women desire to become beautiful and powerful, even if they don’t say it in words. And the Photographer plays with that concept and creates that desire, that you can become that person you see in the photograph. And live that lifestyle. Photographers use techniques from the cinema/cinematic, to create the desire of viewers/Buyer/Consumers. The cinematic techniques made it possible the way people lived and the...
The video is made up of 3 main components. There is Julia Roberts as the voice of Mother nature, eerie music and images and videos of some of the most beautiful parts of our planet.
