To Cheez or Not to Cheez?
In this paper I will briefly analyze the ingredients of original cheddar Cheez-It crackers. As stated on the box, the crackers are supposedly “made with 100% real cheese”. We’ll see how well that statement holds up at the end of this. The ingredients are as follows:
• Enriched flour (wheat flour, niacin, reduced iron, thiamin mononitrate).
• Riboflavin (vitamin B2), folic acid.
• Vegetable oil (cottonseed, palm, sunflower and/or soybean oil with TBHQ for freshness).
• Skim milk cheese (skim milk, whey protein, cheese cultures, salt, enzymes, and Annatto extract for color).
• Salt.
• Paprika.
• Yeast.
• Paprika extract (for color).
• Soy lecithin.

One box of original cheddar Cheez-Its contains 1,035mg of this, and the so called “minimum requirement”, according to several sources, is 1,500mg per day under ideal conditions. So the amount of sodium being consumed in a single box of Cheez-Its is almost the equivalent to one day’s recommended amount.
Paprika is a spice most commonly used to add color (its extract is used in Cheez-Its) and flavor to dishes and foods. It is known for being packed with anti-oxidants, nutrients, and numerous health benefits. This easily ranks as the healthiest ingredient in Cheez-Its.
Yeast is put in Cheez-Its to give the bright orange and cheesy taste the food is known for. The health benefits of [nutritional] yeast are that it’s packed with B vitamins, proteins, and is low in fats. Unfortunately, however, Cheez-Its do not contain enough yeast to make a significant impact when it comes to said health benefits.
The final ingredient is soy lecithin, which is a common food additive found in today’s marketplace. As for the statement on the front of the box: does it hold up? The short answer is yes, though not in the way consumers are being led to believe. While Cheez-Its are centered around the skim milk cheese, the vitamins and nutrients of said cheese are drained and changed over time. Will I eat these again? After hours of research on the various ingredients and the components of each, I don’t think I’ll be pouring myself a bowl of Cheez-Its anywhere near as frequently as
