Anderson’s Che Guevara: A Revolutionary Life is both a perceptive and definitive biography on the life of Che Guevara. Anderson has written a very thorough and engaging book, separating the myth from the man. Anderson has talked directly with many important people in Guevara's life, including his wives and the wife of the man who executed him. When asked to write about an important activist who has demonstrated protest, I immediately drifted towards a Hispanic and/or feminist activist. Various names came across my mind initially such as Cesar Chavez and Joan Baez but as a later discussion in class concluded, there are numerous others who are rarely highlighted for their activism and struggles, which lead to me researching more. In my research I came across Dolores Huerta, an American labor leader and civil rights activist, who I felt was an underdog and brushed over activist in the Hispanic community.

Lope de Aguirre, better known as the Prince of Freedom, was a Spanish soldier who partook in not only the Spanish conquest and exploration of South America, but later on led the rebellion against Spanish rule in parts of the continent. Aguirre is not only known for his extreme acts of brutality against Spanish leaders, but for being one of the first to claim himself as an American. He played a key role in the fight for independence against the Spanish monarchy. His great acts of violence against Spanish leaders placed him in control of the Island of Margarita (Venezuela), Panama, Chile, and Peru. His betrayal to the Spanish crown was frowned upon and he was soon thought of as a symbol of cruelty and treachery in Colonial Spanish America. Lope de Aguirre payed the ultimate price for his acts of cruelty and violence and was captured and killed by the Spaniards in 1561.
In closing, Francisco faced many hardships throughout his life. He had to adapt to his life here in the United States, deal with being a male in his family, as well as face discrimination. Through all the hard times, family and getting a good education were always his top priorities. With the help of his teachers and counselors, he was able to succeed in school, unlike the majority of the students. Francisco is a true hero in the eyes of many Hispanic immigrants who come to the United States and strive to be the best they can be.
Carlos Fuentes was born on November the eleventh, nineteen twenty-eight; he was the son of a Mexican diplomat. Carlos was very well educated; he attended schools in Washington D.C., later went on to get a law degree from the University of Mexico in Mexico City, and even studied abroad at the Institute of Advanced International Studies in Geneva. He was always inspired by writing; his law degree was merely a way to satisfy his parents. His parents did not see a future in being a writer. Fuentes was also a very well rounded traveler, because of his fathers career Fuentes was able to get a look at other cultures and governments. His travels took him throughout Mexico, the United States, Cuba, into Europe, and most importantly throughout Latin America. He was able to come to understand how governments worked, the way big business used people for their own wealth and power. Fuentes was rather disgusted by corrupt governments and big businesses and actively stood up for what he believed was right. He was very liberal and at one point even joined the communist party. He used his writings to display to people from around the world the way that business and government used and betrayed the average citizen. He was revolutionary in the way he was able to use characters in his writings to disclose the big picture and history of his own home land, the country of Mexico.
Argentine born, Marxist revolutionary Ernesto "Che" Guevara played an important part for the Cuban revolution as guerrilla, as minister of industry, and as a figure that influenced the Cuba 's revolution with his philosophy of a "new man," a new society that could be motivated by the morals rather than by personal gain. In the 1960s, several groups such as African-Americans, women, Mexican-Americans, and more experienced inequality. The 1960s was a period in which groups in society were fighting for their equal rights; it is known as the Civil Rights Movement because different groups sought to eliminate discrimination. During this time period, conflicts arose between laborers and employers because of the harsh working environment and unfair wages with low benefits. One group that experienced inequality in the workplace was Latinos, specifically Mexican-American farmers, in the United States. One individual named Cesar Chavez was determined to improve the lives of migrant workers who had unequal rights in employment opportunities. Chavez was intent to help migrant workers who worked in grape areas because they earned less money than other groups and the conditions weren't fair either, so the workers demanded that they earn fair treatment. Cesar Chavez and the National Farm Workers Association (NFWA) that he created showed how determined they were to grant workers’ rights during the 1960s by organizing strikes, marches, and boycotts in their pursuit of equality.
The 2006 film V for Vendetta, a cinematic remake of the classic graphic novel series by the same name, is the epitome of a Marxist fairy tale. The film is complete with a bourgeoisie government who spreads their ideology, via mass media, to a citizenry composed entirely of proletariats, and a hero who sets out to break said citizenry from the prison of false consciousness. The textbook also mentions how Fidel Castro formed local camps as a new revolutionary power (510). They continued to fight in urban areas. It was not until 1959 where they defeated Batista and his government. Many people were happy because Fidel Castro became the president of Cuba. The Cuban people had faith in Fidel Castro to improve the state of Cuba and benefit the people unlike Batista. This drifted from the Marxist idea of how a revolution would occur which was a social revolution in which the working class would overthrow the bourgeoisie in a heavily industrialized country. On July 26th 1953, Fidel Castro led an attack on the Moncada Barracks. This one event is thought to be the start of the Cuban Revolution and also the event that became the name for Castro’s movement (Movimiento 26 Julio). The attack of the Moncada Barracks also led to the arrest of Fidel Castro. On October 16th 1953, Castro gave a four-hour speech where he served as his own defense against the charges he was being he accused of. He later reconstructed his speech for publication, which became known as History Will Absolve Me. On April 17th, 1961 the Bay of Pigs invasion took place. After Bay of Pigs there was a clear shift in the dynamics in the U.S.- Cuban relationship. The dynamics of this relationship had begun to change from 1953 to 1961 but Bay of Pigs was the event that had far-reaching implications for both Cuba and the United States.
Fidel Alejandro Castro Ruz was born on August 13, 1926, near Birάn in Cuba’s Eastern Oriente Province to a wealthy sugar plantation owner and a mother who was a domestic servant to his father’s first wife (Source A). Castro was the third of six children and was raised in prominently wealthy circumstances that allowed him to attend well known and well revered schools like Belen Jesuit Prep. (Source A). He was a man that could not be just labeled solely by one phrase or one convenient definition, he was loved by supporters of communist rule and he was also a face feared by many Cubans. He held multitudes of titles to countless different people, ranging from honorable military leader to a protruding symbol of the communist revolution in Latin America that was feared by the Cuban people and Americans alike.
