In the story “American History”, by Judith Ortiz Cofer, the setting takes place on a cold gray November day in Paterson, New Jersey as described by the narrator. The narrator is a 14 year old 9th grader named Elena who is Puerto Rican. Elena lives in a melting pot tenement called, “El Building”. Music is constantly playing in this building and joy is always trying to be spread. Elena goes to Public School 13 and she highly dislikes the environment in her school. On the day John F. Kennedy was shot, her city changed in an interesting way. The inciting incident begins when Elena was playing on the playground with some black girls who were bullying her for not spinning the jump rope fast enough. On that cold day Elena’s hands were very cold and she could not keep up. The girls said racial slurs and called Elena names like,”Skinny Bones” which made Elena very sad. Elena was very lonely just trying to make friends but nobody accepted her and she always felt very isolated at all times. …show more content…

Elena would read books on her fire escape and from the spot she would sit at she could see the couple’s kitchen and backyard. She knew when they were arguing, when one of them was sick, and she was a part of their family without theme even knowing it. What Elena was doing was a term called “voyeurism” which is overwatching in a less stalker way. After a few weeks of the house being vacant because the husband possibly died, a tall blonde boy with glasses named Eugene moves in.
