He expresses that American society’s values, which degrades education, results in demeaning terms to address intelligence which is wrong since intellectuals don’t deserve to be classified negatively for their efforts in studying. While this article was written extremely well and understandable it is not very effective, An effective article or essay will have a strong style, language and tone.“Hidden Intellectualism” does not have a clear or strong style mentioned in the essay. The author is clear with his point and opinion but he restates himself multiple times. He does not have a clear style of writing where the reader can collect and group their personal thoughts together. The author’s tone is also very bias and harsh towards the subject. The article states “Give me the student anytime who writes sharply argues, sociologically acute analysis of an issue of source over the students who writes a lifeless explication on Hamlet or Socrates Apology”(Graff 792). The author does not look at the other perspective of others and only focuses on his point of view. The articles detail also is not very adequate or strong,”Hidden Intellectualism” states “I offer my own adolescent experience as a case in point” (Graff 788). In the article, “Hidden Intellectualism” and “Small Change: Why the Revolution Will Not Be Tweeted” authors Graff and Gladwell both insists that knowledge does not only belong to those people who are educated, but also it belong to the people who gets scholarly from media or from the environment, known as “street smarts”. When looking into the history of our culture, there are many subtopics that fall under the word, “history.” Topics such as arts and literature, food, and media fall into place. Among these topics reside sports. Since the beginning of time, sports have persisted as an activity intertwined with the daily life of people. Whether it is a pick-up game of football in the backyard, or catching an evening game at the local stadium, sports have become the national pastime. According to Marcus Jansen of the Sign Post, more specifically, baseball is America’s national pastime, competing with other sports (Jansen 1). Providing the entertainment that Americans pay top dollar for, live the role models, superstars, and celebrities that put on a jersey as their job. Anti –intellectualism is when a person disregards intellect and reason in solving viable situations and understanding the reality of the situation; but, instead uses action and emotions to solve them. Now, this is not saying that those who are uneducated and unintelligent are classified as anti-intellectualist; even those who are educated and judicious are subjective.
