Ambiguity, not to be confused with vagueness, occurs when something is open to one or more interpretation. Ambiguous situations are usually drawn from the information within a story. Authors intentionally use this tool in literature to force the reader to interpret the story for him or herself. Ambiguity in literature serves to create a deeper meaning of a literary work. The reader is given the liberty to be able to use their imagination to explore and interpret new meanings behind a work. A sentence can become ambiguous just by a statement, or word, being misplaced. Ambiguity can develop in both characters or stories. William Faulkner's "A Rose For Emily" is one of these such stories.
