In summary, on 09/02/16 at 1829 hours, I assisted Ofc. G. Lara at 2126 S Cicero Ave. in regards to traffic stop. Upon arrival, I spoke with Ofc. E. Lara #205, who related the driver (Gomez, Benigno DOB 02/13/71) on his traffic stop had signs of impairment (glassy bloodshot eyes and a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating from his breath/person). I made contact with Benigno, I observed him to have red, glassy, and bloodshot eyes. Benigno related that he understands English and I did not have any issues communicating with him. While speaking with Benigno, I detected a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage from his breath/person. Benigno agreed to perform several field sobriety tests. Benigno was staggering and swaying as he walked to perform the tests. The tests were conducted on a dry, hard, level, non-slippery surface off the roadway. Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test - Benigno related that he does not wear contacts or have any problems with his eyes. I observed him to have equal pupil size and tracking in each eye, so I continued with the HGN tests. I gave the instructions and Benigno stated he understood them. At that call the one officer spoke in Spanish to the people in question so I did not understand a thing that was said. We did pull over a vehicle that was swerving. Officer Todd was nice enough to let me go up to the vehicle with him because of my background of being an officer many moons ago and knowing about officer safety. There were to subjects in the car, a female driving and a male passenger. He asked for driver’s license and registration we took that back to the vehicle and the female was driving on expired driver’s license. Officer Todd also could smell the odor of alcohol in the vehicle. At this time a fellow officer Banks came over to myside and opened the car door and talked with the male passenger. My assignment was to attend an Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) meeting and write my observations and thoughts on the meeting, its structure and philosophical beliefs. I was extremely uncomfortable about attending such a personal meeting. Would individuals welcome me or feel as if I would judge? Even though I was uncomfortable, I am glad I attended the meeting as it was a very enlightening experience for me.
As we cruised around the community, he pointed out countless minor traffic violations, both moving and non-moving, but opted not to make any stops. Eventually, as we came up behind an older civic (the Civic had a broken brake light) on Centreville Road, the officer stated that he detected the scent of marijuana coming from the Civic. The driver of the Civic noticed Crutchman’s police cruiser behind him and dropped his speed to 5 mph under the posted limit. Officer Crutchman began tailing the vehicle which immediately turned off on the next available road. We proceeded to follow the Civic for a couple of miles. I could tell that Officer Crutchman wanted to make the stop, and I inquired why he hadn’t done so already on account of the Civic’s faulty brake light. Clinical psychologists spend about one-fourth of their time dealing with people who are suffering in part from alcohol or other substance problems (Vaillant, 1995). Although alcohol problems have been around for so long, it is only recently that these problems have begun to be associated with medical or psychological difficulties.

Most people do not realize that alcohol is a drug that claims the lives of youth in college campuses across the world. In my case, it took the encounter with the ORL staff at UCLA for me to come to understanding that I am putting myself and those around me in danger through my risky drinking habits. With hours of self-reflection and the help of a cosmopolitan article called The Deadly Drinking Mistakes Smart Girls Make, I have found that there are several risks associated with alcohol that can put me at a quarrel with death. Even so, drinking does not always need to be deadly, and by keeping in mind the well-being of my fellow bruins and the skills mentioned in the article, I can find a balance between drinking for fun and drinking till death.
