Albert Sidney Johnston was raised in a family of hard workers and he had a good childhood. He fought for the army of Texas in the Mexican war, with the US army in the black hawk war, and he fought for the Confederate States of America in the Civil War. He was a hardworking man who had a life that revolved around the military. Johnston fought for the US army and was a Brevet Brigadier from 1826-1834 and 1849-1861. He fought for the Texas army and was a Brigadier general from 1836-1840. Also For the CSA army he was a General from 1861-1862.

Albert Sidney Johnston was born on February 2, 1803 in Washington, Kentucky. His dad was Dr. John Johnston and his mother was Mary Stoddard.(Johnston, pg. 1) She died when Johnston was young. Albert had three brothers under Mary Stoddard; Josiah,Darius, and Orramel. ( Johnston, pg.2) His dad later remarried to Abigail Harris. Johnston attended Transylvania University but got invited to West Point Military Academy. At this point he was a young private. This was before he made a name for himself in the Texas Army. Johnston was in a lot of rough battles and had many times that he was close to death. The Utah war is when Johnston made a true name for himself. The US army under his command marched in and crushed the Mormon revolt. The Mormon had set up a blockade so the US army could not invade the salt lake valley. The war ended in under a year. After this war Johnston was assigned the Western Front which stretched from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean. Johnston was stationed in San Francisco when Texas succeeded from the Union in January 1861. (Glaze) As was the case with most southerners, Johnston’s loyalty to his state trumped his devotion to his country, and he resigned his commission in April 1861.
