Aisha and Alisha were two sisters who were homeless. Neither sisters were married in the past or presently. The race, religion, and cultural background were not stated in the video. The girls spoke English. They were born in Minnesota. Both Aisha and Alisha graduated high school. And Aisha even attended the University of Minnesota. But Aisha was only there for a limited time. Because of her homelessness, Aisha had to stay in a student housing for the summer. She could not pay for it so in return could not go back to school that following fall semester because of her outstanding bill. Whereas her sister had this fairytale idea that she would be in the dorm with her sister at school and everything would be solved, but she did not get accepted into the school with her sister. Aisha now goes to school and is majoring in economics. As well as work for a brokerage firm. In Aisha’s situation she was the one who was physically abused, that lead her and her sister being taken from the home. Aisha had a brown spot on her arm where someone burned her from a cigarette. Aisha or her sister, Alisha was ever diagnosed with any psychiatric problem or have substance problems. But their mother did. Aisha was in a situation where she could not go back to school because of an outstanding bill. But now she is back in school. She did not let a situation keep her down. As for her sister, Alisha, She is trying to be the mother to her child that she wish she had in her life. Limitations for Aisha would be that she has to work and full time and go to school. One that was immediately noticed she may have is a dissociative disorder. When traumatic events are happening to her she dissociates to protect herself. She becomes a famous singer everyone loves and admires. Although it may not be dissociative identity disorder as she does not dissociate into more than one person when it happens. She becomes a famous star all the times she dissociates so this may rule out that disorder. Dissociative amnesia may be a possibility. I believe there would be enough evidence to show she has a dissociative disorder. Another mental disorder she may have is depression. “3.5 million people will experience homelessness in a given year,”(Los Angeles Homeless Services). This shocking number is one of the sad truths in today’s society. Homelessness is caused by a wide range of things including financial issues. The life of a homeless person is hard and comes with set-backs and the constant need to overcome them. Homeless people go through many challenges in surviving without a home. They can suffer from health issues, hunger, and poor emotional well-being.
A recurring issue in the United States has been homelessness. Chronic homelessness is defined by the National Alliance to End Homelessness as, “long-term or repeated homelessness, coupled with a disability.” Usually this disability is substance abuse or a mental health issue that may also lead to other health consequences. Chronic homelessness is a small population of the total homeless population. Despite being a smaller population, they are the most at risk because of their behavioral health issues.
‘Homelessness’ is when an individual or family cannot afford permanent housing. Homelessness is a common problem in human history. There are many reasons why people reached the state of homelessness such as; physical, economic, social and political. These problems continue to interfere with people’s lives. In the early stages of the American colonial settlement, homelessness became a huge problem in America. Most recently homelessness has been caused by the high cost of housing, alcoholism and drug addictions, mental health issues, joblessness and military veterans coming home. Many people who have jobs here in America still cannot afford permanent housing because the minimum wage which is $7.25 is not enough money to make a good living. The people who gets pay $7.25 an hour struggles because by the time they’re done paying all their bills they have very little to buy groceries, so most of the times people buy food for them and their family which means eventually they’re going to owe a lot of money for rent, which is going to lead to eviction. The United States needs a comprehensive plan to end homelessness in the richest country in the world once and for all.
Jasmine Beckford’s case is the oldest out of the three; in 1984 Jasmine died as a result of long-term abuse aged 4. In 1981 her and her younger sister suffered serious injuries and were paced with foster carers for six months. After this they were allowed back home with their mother on a trial basis as social services were meant to support them. During the last ten months of Jasmine’s life she was only seen once by social workers (Corby, 2006).
There are currently over 200 million people living on this earth with no place to call their home. England contains a very small percentage of this population, around .002%, while its capital, London, holds an even smaller amount. This small amount is not surprising, because the United Kingdom has a very encompassing Safety Net. This Safety Net is in place to help those who are or are about to become homeless. In fact the United Kingdom’s Safety Net is one of the most comprehensive in the world (“Homelessness Facts and Figures”). Unfortunately many people still end up homeless, over 6,000 in the city of London. Many, more fortunate people, strive to help those sleeping on the streets, whether on their own or through a charity like St. Mungo’s on Broadway. On the opposite end of the spectrum, there is an unfortunate amount of people who are not only apathetic, but cruel to the people left in a tough situation. It’s shown satirically on television, made fun of in music, and joked about in day-to-day activities: being homeless. I don’t understand what’s so funny about being homeless. The struggle to stay alive in an uninviting climate with nothing but the clothes on your back, doesn’t seem very fun. Yet in the media, being homeless is still treated like a joke. In my fieldwork/work it is sad to see the situations that children are placed in because bad behaviors and the situation that has caused homelessness. Some parents do not take their current condition serious, when they come into the shelter/program rules, goals, and follow-up with coaches/family advocate must be followed. It sad and frustrating when parents care more about themselves than their children; it's the children who suffer. The helping profession is caring about others and trying to assist them in improving their lifestyle for the future. In my opinion, I am very lucky to have had a roof over my head for my entire life, so far. My parents are what I consider to be very hard working people and I believe myself to be lucky for having them always pay the bills and provide not only a house for me to live in, but also the life that I have become accustomed too. By no means is my family incredibly wealthy, but in my opinion and in comparison to the women in the article “Fear, Romance and Transience in the Lives of Homeless Women”, my family is significantly better off. This article focuses on the lives of three women who are homeless and explores their struggles and triumphs of the life that they live.
