My name is Aidan Justice and I attend Oklahoma State University where I am a sophomore Agribusiness and Agricultural Communications double major in the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources. My minor is in Environmental Economics and Public Policy, which I will be receiving through the Natural Resources and Ecology Management department. The two majors I have chosen to complete during my undergraduate studies will equip me with important skills and knowledge that are versatile and efficient. Agribusiness is described as various businesses that collectively process, distribute, and support farm products. The communications aspect of my degree is how businesses will inform, persuade, and sell their products to the public. …show more content…
The study of agribusiness applies the various business methods and economic principles to solve real-world problems in the production, distribution, and consumption of agricultural goods and services. This degree prepares students for a multitude of challenges graduates may face when they enter into their career ranging from business management, finance, marketing, policy analysis and development, farm or ranch management, environmental management, rural development, and community development. I am majoring in Agricultural Communications because it goes along with the business side so well. Every good leader starts by being a successful communicator, whether that is oral or written. The agricultural production and processing industry is faced with issues of image, ethics and survival, according to the Utah State University agricultural communication program. American agriculture comes under scrutiny from consumers, government agencies and environmental interest groups. There is a significant demand in agribusiness and related fields for skilled
Agribusiness is a growing profession across our nation. Each year our Legislature introduces new farm bills requiring additional need for in-depth studies and introduction to the ever changing farming system. The ranch manager becomes the caretaker of crops, livestock and other animals. A lot of their time is spent outdoors and in meetings with farmers and government agencies. They are basically on call, whether they are tending to farm matters; working and meeting with government agencies; and/or speaking to local communities sharing various farming techniques, they are constantly busy. Ranch managers are an integral part in agribusiness, their focus is to manage and produce a successful farm operation while maintaining required government
An interest in business and agricultural studies has always taken some form throughout my life, whether it was running a farm in seventh grade, building a mentoring program during freshmen year or acting as the treasurer for National Honors Society. At first I was learning to grow a variety of fruits and vegetables and then determining how to sell them in order to achieve a net profit. Later I studied how to successfully construct a budget for a new mentoring class at our school and this year I have studied the complex theories of economics and management taking place on a worldwide scale. These experiences have built my passion for Applied Economics and Management at Cornell’s College of Agriculture and Sciences. This specific college has the classes and professors that demonstrate the same interests I am looking for in college. Although I have already gained a great amount of business knowledge, my studies have also taught me about the endless approaches and lenses in which you can view a business problem. Whether it be to delve into the mind of the consumer and understand what mak...
In 1919, farmers from thirty states, including Missouri, saw a need. They gathered in Chicago and formed the American Farm Bureau Federation. In 1919, they had one goal, they wanted to speak for themselves with the help of their own national organization. Since 1919, Farm Bureau has operated by a philosophy that states: “analyze the problem of farmers and develop a plan of action for these problems” (Missouri). In the past 94 years, the A...
The idea of the family farm has been destroyed by large food corporations. As discussed in class, industrial farming typically leads to the mass produ...
With this major, I will be able to further my education in ways to be healthy and possibly learn how to help others. I decided that being a health physician or nutritionist was something that I was really interested in. This is where communication studies come in. I figured that if I minored in communication studies, I could improve my oral and written communication to better help in my future of nutrition. Communication studies was a good pick for me because, although there is always room for improvement, I can still garnish with some more knowledge and information to better improve my oral skills.
Now this is the kind of question a mother wants to hear from her children. Not 'Can I play on the interstate?' or 'If I eat this will I die?' Something, instead, wholesome and good. An activity that not only teaches, but puts fresh produce on her table.
Farmers are essentially the back-bone of the entire food system. Large-scale family farms account for 10% of all farms, but 75% of overall food production, (CSS statistics). Without farmers, there would be no food for us to consume. Big business picked up on this right away and began to control the farmers profits and products. When farmers buy their land, they take out a loan in order to pay for their land and farm house and for the livestock, crops, and machinery that are involved in the farming process. Today, the loans are paid off through contracts with big business corporations. Since big business has such a hold over the farmers, they take advantage of this and capitalize on their crops, commodities, and profits. Farmers are life-long slaves to these b...
It requires very smart thinking and many strenuous courses in order to get the proper degree. First of all, you need a bachelor's degree in agricultural science. If you are thinking about this career you should try to major in either engineering or agriculture. Majoring in one of these two categories will give you a head start when looking for an opening. Choosing the proper college is a good idea. Since I live in Iowa, colleges near me that would be good are either ISU or SDSU. Being an agricultural engineer has many benefits. One of them being is there are factories everywhere. You wouldn’t have to travel very far to get to one. Like before, you should be good at engineering or knowledgeable at
Being from Venezuela, a country that is now going through a dictatorial regime that controls almost all media outlets, made me realize the importance of freedom of speech and free media. For this reason I decided to pursue a major in Broadcast Journalism in The Pennsylvania State University. By my second semester in school, I knew I wanted to complement my Journalism degree with another major, a field that could be, in the future, my topic of specialization for all my stories. Economics grabbed my attention from the first ECON class I attended; I noted this area of study was very broad and influential for most of the stories that were heading the news every day. I also felt a strong interest for this subject due to the tough economic crisis my natal country was and still is going through. For these reasons, I decided to pursue a double major and on May 2013 I graduated with Cum Laude distinction with a BA in Broadcast Journalism and BS in Economics.
With the rise as with the technology, challenges for farmers are growing too as earlier growers had to have knowledge in agronomics, risk management, marketing their products and it has become even more competitive with the surge in new precision agricultural practices and products. The growers have to tone their IT skills in order to run their day to day life, analyze the enormous amount of data to optimize the operations and be up to date with the current trends and the competition in the market.
As an Industrial Engineer with more than 15 years of work experience, I choose Supply Chain Management (SCM) because I believe that logistics is the most dynamic, vibrant, challenging, technology driven area, and the future of any big national and international companies. It will give me the opportunity to know behind the scene of improving the companies’ performance by using SCM tools. If I work in this field, I can get my answers and a chance to work in the market of raw material, purchasing, production, distribution, logistics, and final goods. After finishing two semesters in the College of Business at University of Houston Downtown (UHD), I am really passionate about it and want to gain my knowledge in the logistics sector, learn new techniques and skills, and seek new opportunities.

Agriculture is the industry that I am choosing to reflect upon that is one of the top industries in the United States and therefore I felt it to be a good industry to focus on.
