African-American Troops in the Civil War: The 54th Massachusetts
The Fifty-fourth Massachusetts was organized in early 1863 by Robert
Gould Shaw, twenty-six year old member of a prominent Boston abolitionist family.
Shaw had earlier served in the Seventh New York National Guard and the Second
Massachusetts Infantry, and was appointed colonel of the Fifty-fourth in
February 1863 by Massachusetts governor John A. Andrew.
As one of the first black units organized in the northern states, the
Fifty-fourth was the object of great interest and curiosity, and its performance would be considered an important indication of the possibilities surrounding the use of blacks in combat. The regiment was composed primarily of free blacks from throughout the north, particularly Massachusetts and Pennsylvania. Amongst its recruits was Lewis N. Douglass, son of the famous ex-slave and abolitionist,
Frederick Douglass.
After a period of recruiting and training, the unit proceeded to the
Department of the South, arriving at Hilton Head, South Carolina, on June 3,
1863. The regiment earned its greatest fame on July 18, 1863, when it led the unsuccessful and controversial assault on the Confederate positions at Battery
Wagner. In this desperate attack, the Fifty-fourth was placed in the vanguard and over 250 men of the regiment became casualties. Shaw, the regiment's young colonel, died on the crest of the enemy parapet, shouting, "Forward, Fifty- fourth!" That heroic charge, coupled with Shaw's death, made the regiment a household name throughout the north, and helped spur black recruiting. For the remainder of 1863 the unit participated in siege operations around Charleston, before boarding transports for Florida early in February 1864. The regiment numbered 510 officers and men at the opening of the Florida Campaign, and its new commander was Edward N. Hallowell, a twenty-seven year old merchant from
Medford, Massachusetts. Anxious to avenge the Battery Wagner repulse, the Fifty- fourth was the best black regiment available to General Seymour, the Union commander. Along with the First North Carolina Colored Infantry, the Fifty-fourth entered the fighting late in the day at Olustee, and helped save the Union army from complete disaster. The Fifty-fourth marched into battle yelling, "Three cheers for Massachusetts and seven dollars a month." The latter referred to the difference in pay between white and colored Union infantry, long a sore point with colored troops. Congress had just passed a bill correcting this and giving colored troops equal pay. However, word of the bill would not reach these troops until after the battle of Olustee. The regiment lost eighty-six men in the battle, the lowest number of the three black regiments present. After Olustee, the Fifty-fourth was not sent to participate in the bloody Virginia campaigns
from union fire. Most start to flee but he continues to march, and is shot and killed.

In 1619, slaves from Africa started being shipped to America. In the years that followed, the slave population grew and the southern states became more dependent on the slaves for their plantations. Then in the 1800s slavery began to divide America, and this became a national conflict which lead to the Civil War. Throughout history, groups in the minority have risen up to fight for their freedom. In the United States, at the time of the Civil War African Americans had to fight for their freedom. African Americans used various methods to fight for their freedom during the Civil War such as passing information and supplies to the Union Army, escaping to Union territory, and serving in the Union’s army. These actions affected the African Americans and the United States by helping the African Americans earn citizenship and abolishing slavery in the United States.
During winter months, basic huts were constructed from wood when it was available. During the civil war, most of the soldiers fought only 75 percent of the time. When they were not fighting, their day usually started at 5:00 in the morning during the summer and spring, and 6:00 in the morning during the fall and winter. Soldiers would be awakened by fifes and drums, then the first sergeant would take a roll call, and all the men sat down to eat breakfast. During the day, soldiers would be engaged in sometimes as many as five 2-hour long drill sessions on weaponry or maneuvers.

Even though Hester faced a lot of adversities in the story, she is able to gain advantages as well when she gains power through the scarlet letter. Aside from power, she is also able to utilize the symbol to exercise her freedom against the laws of a patriarchal society. Furthermore, she is also able to control the badge’s meaning as well because through her charity work for the town, she was able to reverse the interpretation of the public to the scarlet symbol. However, this is not the only source of Hester’s power because apart from the scarlet letter, her knowledge about the concept of silence plays an important for this as well. When she remains reserve despite the constant and intimidating interrogations that she receives on the scaffold, she is able to control the townspeople’s curiosity. Other than control, the scene in the scaffold is also able to prove how determined Hester is especially when she stood up for her decision to keep the father’s name a secret. Moreover, the scene also displays her strength as a woman, which was deemed to be uncommon considering the stereotypes present during the Puritan era. Indeed, despite the existence of prejudice against women in the patriarchal Puritan community, Hester Prynne shows how women can destroy the gender discrimination and make the society

That being said, however, there were two different types of slave masters. The two forms were benign and demonic slavery. Benign slavery, while still being a form of slavery, was tolerable for slaves and in some instances even pleasant. Slaves were clothed, fed, and given basic rights. Under demonic slavery, however, slaves were subjected to being physically tortured and beaten. Eliza, under the rule of Master Shelby lived in benign slavery. Because they were kind slaveholders, Mrs. Shelby showed her distaste in her husband’s choice to sell Henry. It was demonic slaveholders that pressed for the passage of laws like the fugitive slave law in 1850. This law demanded the return of any runaway slaves. If a white person would claim a black person as a slave, that person would immediately be returned to the south as a slave even if they were a free man. This act also tore black families apart. Solomon Northup for example, was wrongly turned in as a slave and was kept away from his family for over 10 years. Eric Foner, a professor of history at Columbia University explained that it was disturbing to him “to remember that there were thousands of free born Americans who fled to Canada because their freedom could no longer be taken for granted in the United States” (PBS). It would have been easy for people like Senator Bird in Uncle Tom’s Cabin to pass a law such as the fugitive slave law because they most likely would never see
This time period also saw rising tensions against widows and church members that would disobey. Individuals who defied the Puritan leaders would often be exiled. (Campbell, 2013, 2015; Hallenbeck, 2002). Hester Prynne is the prime example of these two aspects as she is publicly humiliated because of her “sinful” passion. In the narrative, it states, “… the heavy weight of a thousand unrelenting eyes, all fastened upon her… she felt, at moments, as if she must needs shriek out with the full power of her lungs, and cast herself from the scaffold down upon the ground, or else go mad at once” (Hawthorne 40). This event leads to the seclusion of Hester Prynne and her daughter, Pearl, from society (Gayatri, 2014). At first, it seems like a religious victory for the Puritans, but as time goes on we see Hester developing into an independent woman away from the Freudian society which tried to conceal her and her sin. Even though the Puritanical society exiles her from their community, Hester represents the strength in women by not letting her past actions decide her future (Symbols, Society and the Individual).
