Recommended: Strengths and weaknesses of the Affordable Care Act

The Affordable Healthcare Act is defined as a health security by giving health insurance to the people that will expand coverage, lower healthcare costs, and enhance the quality of care for all Americans (What is ObamaCare). It improves insurance coverage by expanding Medicaid and by setting up exchanges on which people can purchase policies while receiving income-based subsidies to help cover costs. The Affordable Healthcare Act aids working mothers, retired men and woman, young adults and all working people by providing different healthcare in order to benefit the individual (C.H. 2014). On November 7, 2009, the House approves its version of healthcare reform in a 220-215 vote. December 24, 2009, the Senate approves its version of the healthcare overhaul in a 60-39 party-line vote. On March 23, 2010, President Obama signs the act into law (Timeline: Affordable Care Act). The Republicans call the Affordable Healthcare Act an unconstitutional government takeover of healthcare systems that will increase the cost of healthcare and decrease the quality, because they believe that the act was never really about healthcare, it was always about the power and the impact of the act upon the nation is disastrous. The Affordable Healthcare Act was believed to be passed because of public opinion, but with the promises that the act states, they believe that it would expand Medicaid without significant reform, leaving the states with financial burdens (Simas 2013). The Democratic call the Affordable Healthcare Act a historic victory and the "Law of the Land," which reforms the US healthcare system by controlling healthcare costs, making healthcare more affordable, and protecting consumers from unfair insurance practices. They believe that the healthcare act was part of the American promise and that Americans should have accessible, affordable and high quality healthcare.
