Just Say No to College (An analysis of the unexpected advantages of not going to college) The saying is to expect the unexpected. In life there is much that can go array, but it’s not always for the worse. Even though the circumstances may seem like the end of the world there may be some unexpected advantages that go along with life’s curve ball. Just because we are encouraged to do so not everybody is fit for the college life. Not going to college is not as bad as it is made out to be, and has its own unexpected advantages. Although not going to college has its own downfall the unexpected advantages of not going to college are getting your life into motion, facing criticism as motivation, and starting a family on your own time. When a person opts to not go to college after high school they are often judged and criticized by the people that they grew up with. As people are moving on from their hometowns and heading off to college those who choose that college is not right for them are left behind from most of their friends. No matter what you choose to do in life you will receive criticism from somebody, whether it be out of jealousy or even just because they think you should be doing something else with your life. In Ramie E. McKerrow’s article Criticism is as Criticism Does the focus is that no matter the situation there is always someone out there that is going to criticize you. “Criticism may be offered at inappropriate times, it may be an unintentional (or intentional) misunderstanding of the event or idea being targeted, or it may simply be weak or even deluded.” (McKerrow 546) Here McKerrow talks about how a person is criticized by the people around them. Those that do not go to college are going to get this criticism, but they are able to use it to their advantage. The unexpected advantage of criticism aimed at those to do not attend college is that some are able to take this criticism and use it as a sort of fuel to show those people wrong. They are able to take the the negatives of their life and turn them into something positive, just the opposite of what is expected of them.
