Camping Essentials: What to Bring When You Go Camping
Have you ever noticed that being in the great outdoors increases your appetite? Maybe it's the extra exercise from the hiking, maybe it's breathing in fresh air, it might even be the smell of food cooking over an open fire – whatever the reason, I think we can all agree that there's nothing quite like camping for a relaxing getaway. If you're shaking your head in disagreement then there's a good chance you feel that way because you're forgetting the essentials when packing your gear to head to the site.
So, let's take a look at the essentials and what you should always be taking when heading out to camp.
1. First Aid Kit

4. Directions
Okay, yes, your phone has maps and it even has a compass, but what happens if your phone dies or you lose signal? You get lost. So, take extra precautions and pack a compass and maps for the areas you will be visiting. Before you leave on your trip make sure you know how to read a map and use a compass... it will help.
5. Weather Wear
British weather is notoriously unpredictable, so it's important to pack clothing for every eventuality. That means packing wellies and rain wear even if the outlook is sun. You should pack layers as it's easier to stay warm by layering up, and don't forget gloves and extra socks. The latter is particularly important because if your feet get wet you'll want to avoid trench foot by having extra supplies.
6. Fire
Lighters are a fantastic invention, but you should have matches with you, too. Matches are wonderful, but they can get wet which is why a lighter is important. The point is that you shouldn't choose one or the other, you should be safe and smart and take enough of each, just in case.
7. Toilet

He also mentioned that how harsh the conditions were when they started building their tent by mentioning that even a strong person could wither in a place like that. It was our fifth day in the Philmont Scout Reservation in New Mexico, the halfway point of the trek. I as the Crew Leader was responsible for the other 11 members of the crew, including 4 adults. I was in charge, and amazingly the adults rarely tried to take over, although they would strongly advise me what to do in some situations. Phil, with the exception of me, the oldest scout and the Chaplain for the trip, was my second. Together we dealt with problems of making sure everyone carried the right amount of stuff in their pack to who had to cook and cleanup each day. The trip had gone well so far, no injuries, and the worst problem had been a faulty backpack. As I walked I thought about the upcoming campsite. Throughout Tim O’Brien’s The Things They Carried, there is a constant theme about all the things that the soldiers carry. In the opening chapter, The Things They Carried, the soldiers are carrying tangible and intangible items. The tangible items included things they carried like mosquito repellant, pocket knives, wound compress, tents, weapons, and ammunition for the purpose of basic survival in the war. As the rank of the soldiers increase, the responsibility that needed to be carried also increases. The things they carried were determined by superstition and personal desires. In the beginning of the story we are introduced to Lieutenant Jimmy Cross. Cross is in love with a girl named Martha, and carries letters and pictures she has sent him. He also carries a good-luck pebble he received from Martha, and daydreams about her during their long marches. One day the Lieutenant and his men are marching through Than Kae, Cross is daydreaming as usual, when Ted Lavender is shot in the head and killed. They then “carried” Lavender to a helicopter. Before Lavender died he carried six or seven ounces of dope, which the men smoked after Ted was killed. Other men carried canned peaches, comic books, condoms, bibles, as well as personal weapons like slingshots, brass knuckles, and hatches. The Two Methods of Camping and Which Is Better There are two ways that families or individuals camp. One way is permanent camping, and the other is transient camping. Permanent camping is exactly as it sounds. A camper is placed on a purchased or borrowed lot at a campground and is left there year-round. Transient camping is when one takes a camper with them to a campground and then takes the camper back home after he or she is done. Not all campgrounds have the option of going permanent; in fact most campgrounds only allow transient camping. There are advantages and disadvantages to both, but which is the best? First off Alloway said people need to have a hat with a wide brim and closed crown so it will protect your head and face from sunlight. Next, wear loose fitting long sleeves and pants so that air can be circulated easy. Sunglasses that exclude ultra-violet light are a necessity to help prevent cataracts later on in life. Some other areas of preparation are carrying sufficient amounts of water, first aid and survival kit for the desert environments, and some useful knowledge. It’s 5:00 am in morning, March 5th, today is not going to be a normal day. Today is the day where we leave to go on the Oregon Trail. I got dressed quietly, I didn’t want to wake up my brother. I checked the supplies and I read the pamphlet that I got at the local town center. Talking to myself, I said, “flour, yes, bacon, yes, sugar, yes, coffee, yes, lard, yes; I’m pretty sure we have everything in the supplies list in the pamphlet.”
Henry Dobbins is the guy who loves to eat so he made sure he took some extra food. Ted Lavender was the scaredy cat of the group so he carried tranquilizers with him. Dave Jense is the paranoid one, so he takes soap and a toothbrush to prevent germs and disease as best he can. Kiowa has a bible with him showing us he is the dedicated religious type. Mitchell Sanders, the funny one, has condoms with him. I'll let you decide on that one. Norman Bowker has a diary and Rat Kiley carried comic books, most likely as a way to "get away" from everything at the end of the day. Regardless of the personal items each one takes, they all share 2 items in common; their boots and their helmets. Almost all of them also have pictures with them but Jimmy Cross takes 2 very special ones. He has 2 pictures of the woman he loves, Martha. What these guys are truly carrying is some extreme emotional and physical troubles. Amongst his personal items Jimmy Cross also takes with him navigation tools. Rat Kiley has with him the medicine, surgical tape, painkillers, and other things that end up weighing alot. Ted Lavender is very scared, so he also has with him a large supply of ammunition. Miller about "The Many Benefits of Hiking” I got to thinking what my favorite features and benefits of hiking are.
