Leisure time, each person thinks of something different when they hear this. While reading an essay by Gregory A. Miller about "The Many Benefits of Hiking” I got to thinking what my favorite features and benefits of hiking are. My favorite thing to do in my leisure time is hiking because it calms my mind, it 's great for the body, and I enjoy doing all I can for our earth along the way.

Calming my mind by hiking is one of my favorite things to do in my leisure time. I become so content from being able to forget about the usual troubles that are constantly bouncing around inside my head. Not having to worry if I will be able to get my rent in on time, or worry about if I remembered to lock the front door, which I so often forget to do, it frees my mind up for more happy and productive thoughts. Walking for days alone in the woods brings me such euphoria. A high comparable to one someone would get off of taking amphetamines. Although it may seem like a contradiction to my prior statement about being having a free mind, but when my mind is like this I can focus on so many things. Hiking is great cardio, improving your heart rate and also lowering risks of a heart attack. It improves bone density immensely since walking is weight bearing exercise, which will makes it harder to break a bone in case of an accident. It builds and tones muscles at the same time as improving balance. Studies have shown that hiking helps relieve symptoms of stress and anxiety. I mean why wouldn 't it, filling my lungs with crisp unpolluted oxygen, the sound of birds chirping and the wind bellowing through the trees, the aroma of flowers and the sweet essence of a fresh creek, the views from the highest hills and the tallest trees.
