How do animals survive in hostile environments? Do they sacrifice their lives for others of their kind, or do they sacrifice other members of their species for a chance to live? Sometimes, adapting to life may mean sacrificing your humanity and getting tough. For example, coming to somebody’s aid may seem like the brave, honourable thing to do, but it may end up costing you your life. The previous statement is an important theme in the novel titled The Outsiders. For two gangs, the Greasers and the Socs, humanity means different things. The Greasers are emotional and try their hardest to keep out of the west side of town, Soc territory, whereas Socs are always looking for trouble, robbing Greasers in their own territory. This statement definitely applies to Dallas Winston when he, Ponyboy and Johnny are in Windrixville and the church has caught fire. Dally grew up in New York City. He ran away from home at a young age and obtained a criminal record at the age of ten. By his teenage years, he had developed a way to survive. He does not care about anybody, except for himself and Johnny, a younger member of the gang. He has a soft spot for Johnny, probably because he sees a lot of himself through Johnny. Johnny’s parents are abusive, and sometimes they are so drunk that they do not even recognize him. Dallas is one of the only people who knows how Johnny feels, because before running away from home, he was also in this situation. However, Johnny is quiet and kind. When Dally was young, these were some of the qualities that he lacked. They are close friends because they each have qualities that are absent in the other’s personality. Johnny is the last thing that Dallas still loves and cares about. Without Johnny, Dallas would only have hate left inside of him. After Johnny kills a Soc in self defense, he and Ponyboy are sent by Dally to an abandoned church in Windrixville, in order to hide from the police. When Dallas comes to take them back home, they stop at Dairy Queen to eat lunch. This novel by S.E Hinton , “The Outsiders” shows a crucial point that everybody is special is some way and be known as who they are not as a group. The important message of the story is that individuals should not take people for granted. Instead, treasure those close to you and understand them.
For example, Johnny is physically the smallest of the group and Dally is always the one there to look out for him and help him with everything that is going on. Dally never has these parent/guardian like feelings for anyone else in the group, he clearly likes and cares for Johnny the most. Even Ponyboy realizes it when he says, “Dally is tougher than I am. Why can I take it and Dally can’t? And then I knew. Johnny was the only thing Dally loved. And now Johnny was gone”(152). Pony makes it crystal clear that Dallas cares for each other unconditionally. Similarly, Johnny has great affection and care for Dally. He realizes he can always look up to Dallas for anything and Dallas always has his back whenever Johnny is in need of some help or advice. Dally was jailed at the age of ten and spent three years on the deleterious side of New York.He became hard and cold, with a hatred of the world, all because he didn’t get the proper attention. Dally himself mentions, "Blast it, Johnny, what do they matter? Shoot, my old man don't give a hang whether I'm in jail or dead in a car wreck or drunk in the gutter. That don't bother me none." It’s what you need to persevere through in order to do something you’ve wanted to do for a long time. If you want to pass that test, you’ve gotta conquer your fears and fight through all the troubles that arrive in front of you. Become your own hero. In The Outsiders, two rival groups, the socs and the greasers, are separated by social class. The friendship between the greasers will be tested when an unexpected event changes everything. The greasers must learn that people experience many tragic events, no matter who the person is. Based on the universal themes, the readers will begin to understand how the characters in the novel grow and change, and how friendship and family help along the way.
For instance, “It had taken more than nerve for him to say what he'd said to Dally—Johnny worshiped the ground Dallas walked on, and I had never heard Johnny talk back to anyone, much less his hero.” (pg. 24) This means that even though Johnny respected Dally because he was there for him when his parents weren’t, he took a risky step and stopped him from doing something wrong. By doing this, it shows that Johnny isn’t afraid to protect others like Cherry when the situation involved his friend Dally. More importantly, “I swear, you three are the bravest kids I’ve seen in a long time. First you and the blacked-haired kid climbing in that window, and then the tough-looking kid going back in to save him. Mrs. O'Briant and I think you were sent straight from heaven. Or are you just professional heroes or something?” (pg. 95) As shown, it is important to realize that Johnny, Ponyboy, and Dally wouldn’t only defend their gang members, but they would also endanger their own lives in order to save others. I feel as though the novel The outsiders has many themes, but the most important one is belonging. The greasers are a group of poor, low class youth that don’t have much and live on the wrong side of town. They are always held accountable for their actions. On the other hand, the Socs are a bunch of high class youth that are very privileged and aren’t held accountable for their immature actions.
The book The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton, follows a horrific part of the life of a boy named Ponyboy Curtis. He is what you might call a Greaser, and has had a rough go at it in his life compared to others. It is difficult, but Ponyboy somehow manages to be himself and has the tenacity to stick through it all. He is in a gang with his friends and family and they are loyal to one another no matter what. A rival gang from the Socs crowd, a richer, more refined group, send him and his pals into a whirlwind of trouble and hurt. This book shows on multiple occasions that perseverance is necessary to get through life .
At what point does conformity become unacceptable and harmful towards an individual’s life? In the novel The Outsiders by S.E Hinton, a gang called the Greasers suffers from stereotype threat and external expectations cause internal expectations within the gang to lower. Expectations of Greasers are set by the Socs, and visa versa for the Socs. As a result of these expectations, Greasers think they can accomplish less than other members of society because that is what is expected of them. When living sometimes we are faced with difficult decisions that affect our friendships. If you knew you were in a jam, what would you do? Who would you run to? Despite the greasers’ reputation as heartless young criminals, they live by a specific code of friendship and honour. In the novel The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton, there are many instances in which the gang members make selfless choices by putting the needs of others ahead of their own. Three examples are, when the gang has each other’s back, Johnny and Ponyboy’s friendship, and Dally risking his life for Johnny.
How can two people who are so different have so much in common? How can a kid who went to jail at the age of ten have anything in common with some kid that does not have a record with the police. However, in S.E. Hinton’s novel The Outsiders there are two such characters. Johnny Cade and Dallas Winston are similar because there parents do not pay attention to them and the gang is their family. Johnny Cade and Dallas Winston are different because Dally likes fighting and Johnny does not. They are also different because Dally is the follows the laws the least and Johnny follows them the most. Therefore, Johnny Cade and Dallas Winston have similarities in their life but have a lot of differences.
In The Outsiders, the Socs and Greasers are in a constant turf war between the East and West side of town, and this causes lots of verbal and physical altercations. Randy an emotionally distraught Soc pointed out, “You can't win, even if you whip us. You'll still be where you were before--- at the bottom. And we'll still be the lucky ones with all the breaks. So it doesn't do any good, the fighting and the killing.” Randy is trying to say that no matter how hard they try no matter how bad someone gets beat it will still be the same after the fight as before the fight. Another example of violence within the gang was Dallas Winston, “Dally had spent three years on the wild side of New York and had been arrested at the age often. He was tougher than the rest of us--- tougher, colder, meaner...I knew he would be dead, because Dally Winston wanted to be dead and he always got what he Wanted.” Even though Dally was one tough guy, after so much exposure to violence and fighting, there came a breaking point for Dally where he could just not take it anymore. After Ponyboy walked home from the lot and a verbal argument began, “Darry wheeled around and slapped me so hard that it knocked me against the door...I turned and ran out the door and down the street as fast as I could.” When siblings fight, especially when it gets physical the consequences only get worse and
The Outsides in an interesting book about the life of a troubled teenage boy named Ponyboy. Ponyboy lives with two other boys that have checkered past named Sodapop and Darry. Ponyboy lives with them because his parents died in a car crash. Ponyboy, Darry, and Sodapop are considered greasers in the book. There is another group called socs which Cherry, Bob, and Sherri are labeled as. Socs and greasers don't get along and don't like each other, they are always fighting. Socs and greasers may seem divergent but they are actually similar in some ways, even if they don't seem like it.
