Across a Hundred Mountains, is a fictitious novel written by Reyna Grande, published in paperback in May 2007 by the First Washington Square Press. The story begins when Juana, an 11-year-old little girl, who lives in Mexico, with her impoverished family, suffering a series of tragic events, which causes Juana’s father to illegally leave for the United States in search of a higher quality of life for his family. Notably, this book sent me on a series of tears, frustration and a bigger desire to help immigrants. If you have never taken the time to think about the struggles of immigrants, this is a must- read book. It will expose you to just a few of the problems that face immigrants daily. They quickly become friends, and Adelina tells her she is an American citizen, she had run away from home following her boyfriend, who quickly exploited her and is her abusive pimp. Adelina vows her love for him, and Juana doesn’t understand why. Adelina gives Juana a place to stay and when Juana cannot obtain a job, she decides to turn to prostitution. She saves her money and desperately searches for he fathers, but she runs into one dead end after another. When Adelina’s boyfriend rapes Juana, she decides that it is time to continue to America, she pleads for Adelina to go with her, and she finally agrees to meet her on the other side. Juana hires a coyote to get her across, but she gets caught and sent back to Tijuana. When she gets to the apartment she shared with Adelina, she finds out that her pimp/boyfriend has killed her. She finds Adelina’s birth certificate and Social Security card and quickly assumes Adelina’s identity. She crosses the border safely, learns English and eventually graduates from ____ University with a Social Work
