The correlation given is that abortion puts women at risk of mental health problems. This correlation seems to be a positive correlation, meaning as abortion goes up, the higher the risk of mental health problems in women. This can be due to the possible side effects of having an abortion, and then it takes a toll emotionally and mentally on the woman, increasing the risk of mental illness. For example, a woman decides to get an abortion and as time passes she feels remorseful about the abortion, which can put the woman at risk in getting a mental illness. An alternative explanation or correlation can be that an increase in poverty can lead to an increase risk of mental illness and an increase in abortions. When a woman is pregnant and cannot afford to keep the child, the woman can decide to abort the child. Poverty can also be linked to a higher risk of mental health problems like anxiety and depression. This can be because of someone’s lack of understanding and awareness of mental illness or because of someone’s lack of access to healthcare. In addition, there is also a positive correlation between violence, abortion, and risk for mental health problems. Although there is correlation, one cannot say that abortion directly causes a higher risk of mental health problems. Just like one cannot say that poverty or violence is a direct cause of abortion and higher risk of mental health problems. The only thing one can say is that these variables being studied are correlated not directly caused by one
