“The Jasenovac camp was the lowest level to which mankind can fall… the most horrible place of torture in the history of man… hell on earth. It was the work of hatred, work of evil, and work of the devil himself;” as stated by a Jasenovac survivor. An estimated 83,000 people were executed in the Croatian concentration camp of Jasenovac. Victims of this camp included Jews, Serbs, Gypsies, and some Bosnian-Muslims. The Ustashe, or Ustaša, was an extreme fascist group in Croatia. Croatia worked as a puppet state to Nazi Germany while under the Ustaša regime. A puppet state is a country that is declared independent, but is actually kept in power by another country’s military force. Croatians are predominantly Catholics, while Serbs are generally Orthodox-Christian, Bosnians are primarily Muslim. Yugoslavia has other outliers like the Roma, who tend to change religion depending on where they are, and Jewish people. Some would expect Croatia and Serbia to join and rise up against Bosnia, but surprisingly, the Christian countries went against each other. The opposing views on faith divided Yugoslavia more than any other reason (United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia). This extreme view ironically caused people to go against their religious regulations and kill. Not only did this corrupt Christianity, but it was also responsible for the deaths of thousands of innocent people. Sadly, ethnic tension in Yugoslavia is hard to diminish. Although the Ustasha were boastful about this genocide, they did not want it to get out of hand. For one, many relevant documents and records were destroyed post-war (TEAM). This was in an attempt to cover up their genocide, uprisings were dangerous to the progress of the Ustasha. Because of this, no closure can be given to the victims or their families.
