Are you an upcoming 7th grader deciding if AVID is an elective you would like to enroll in or you just don't know much about? Well, AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination. It’s a college preparatory program aimed to close the achievement gap by preparing their students for college and success in the real world. Some of AVID’s curriculum focuses on studying skills such as taking Cornell Notes, tutoring, doing in-class tutorials, listening to guest speakers, and going on college field trips. Unlike other electives, AVID requires students who want to join to fill out a form and go through an interview before being accepted. While enrolled in AVID for my two years at Thomas Russell, I improved in writing Cornell Notes, asking questions to high-school tutors, and learning from College field trips. In AVID, writing Cornell Notes is very time consuming but I find them useful to study before any test. If you don't know already, Cornell Notes are a form of writing made to keep all the notes organized. Instead of doing bullet points, Cornell Notes separate the notes into two sections and concludes with a summary at the end. Unlike other electives, AVID gets to learn and experience many different college lifestyles. This year, I had the chance to visit UC Berkeley and Stanford University. I learned about what academics are offered, experience how the campus is like, and learn alot from the school’s origin. When attending the trips, I understand how college is different from middle school. As of now, I'm not sure on what college I plan to go. Though, college field trips inspire me to check out college campuses and make sure I enjoy campus lifestyle. They prepare me for what it’s like to be in
