A Wall of Fire Rising is a short story based on a man named Guy, his wife Lili, and their son Little Guy. They struggled to have food on the table every night in their tiny shack in Haiti. After reading this story most people would assume Lili did not appreciate Guy while he was alive. That she drove him to jump to his death. However, Lili obviously did appreciate him. She may not be madly in love with him as she might have once been, but she did acknowledge his struggle in trying to proved for the family. Lili gave thanks to Guy in expressing gestures of affection and loving words. She always ensured him that his family desires him. One way Lili showed Guy that she appreciated him was by physical touch. Physical touch can be shown by holding hands, kissing, embracing and sexual intercourse with one's spouse. In the story the author wrote, "Lili got up from the floor and inclined her face towards her husband's in order to receive her nightly peck on the cheek." Words of affirmation are words the builds up one's spouses self-esteem. They are best expressed by straightforward compliments or words of appreciation. In the short story the author gives information about how Lili feels for Guy as the man of the family. The author wrote, "I am here with my husband," she said. "You are here to protect me if anything happens." The quote from the story indicates Lili thinks of guy as her proctor. She feels he will come to her rescue if something bad were to happen out by the sugarcane field. Telling Guy she thought of him as her protector he will then feel like manly man.
