A Wall of Fire Rising is a short story based on a man named Guy, his wife Lili, and their son Little Guy. They struggled to have food on the table every night in their tiny shack in Haiti. After reading this story most people would assume Lili did not appreciate Guy while he was alive. That she drove him to jump to his death. However, Lili obviously did appreciate him. She may not be madly in love with him as she might have once been, but she did acknowledge his struggle in trying to proved for the family. Lili gave thanks to Guy in expressing gestures of affection and loving words. She always ensured him that his family desires him. One way Lili showed Guy that she appreciated him was by physical touch. Physical touch can be shown by holding hands, kissing, embracing and sexual intercourse with one's spouse. In the story the author wrote, "Lili got up from the floor and inclined her face towards her husband's in order to receive her nightly peck on the cheek." The novel “Homegoing” by Yaa Gyasi tells us as readers narratives of different people that tie together through genealogy. This story also significantly focuses on the psychological side of a few characters such as Maame and, mainly in the end with Yaw. Throughout the story, something that really intrigued me was the Motif of fire: how it is portrayed during times of trauma, how it shows the significance of anxieties symbolically throughout the story, and how it also ties back to the family lineage of Effia in dreams.
The imagery of fire continues in the story; the building of their fires, how the man molds the fires, and how they stoke the fire. When the boy gets sick the father is referred to many times of how he builds and rekindles the fire. Edwidge Danticat the writer of Krik? Krak! Is a Haitian who is from haiti and immigrated to the US and wrote this book containing stories. She uses her stories and personal experiences to portray what sorrow and despair really is. Using the stories “Between the Pool and Gardenias”, “A Wall of Fire Rising”, and “Night Women” she address what life is like for the people of Haiti. She is also sending us a message, a message to not take what we have for granted because people have much worse lives in other countries
One of the occurring themes is of bravery. The Walls children face adversity when moving from place to place, dealing with bullies and their father goes into an alcohol induced rage. “Brian, Maureen, Lori and I got into more fights than most kids.” Walls tells the readers on page 164. The kids had to learn to stand up for themselves in a harsh community; they had to be brave. Walls also used the theme of forgiveness to teach about the importance of forgiving those who wronged you. Her parents constantly ignored their children’s needs and mistreated them, but in the end they were forgiven for all of that and they were a regular family. “We raised our glasses. I could almost hear Dad chuckling at Mom’s comment in the way he did when he was truly enjoying something.” (Walls 288). The purpose of this comment is to wrap up the story, but it also shows forgiveness and growth. By the end of the book all was forgiven, the neglect, the stealing, the cheating and the lying, and they were family. These themes in the book are an overarching device that is a great tool to show the moral or lesson of the certain story.

This small family lives in a run-down town where work is hard to come by, leading to their poor life style. Lili is a hard worker, always doing what it takes to make sure there is food on the table. Her only hope is that her son will have a better life than the one they are currently living. Little Guy is like many young children; he loves his mother and father and is oblivious to his family’s circumstances. He is a hard worker and wants to succeed in school. Guy, a father who is struggling to create a life for his family, is also trying to find a meaning for his life. After a series of events in the story, Guy comes to the decision to commit suicide. Following his death are the reactions from his family, and ultimately, the end of the story. In “A Wall of Fire Rising,” we learn that man’s ability to dream, often takes an important role in their realities. We see this demonstrated by the thoughts, and actions of Lili, Little Guy, and Guy.
A person's next move can affect them and someone in their life without them even realizing it. So why would they want to make the decision that could result in a sudden death in their family ? It is only right they be held accountable for the steps that lead up to or occurred after, they got entrapped in a life or death situation unless, it happens to be an accident.

In A Wall of Fire Rising, Lili and Little Guy are static characters, while Guy is a dynamic character, and through his action the reader can see there is more in life that he wants for his family.
