For my rhetorical analysis I will be using Marco Cianfanelli’s Nelson Mandela. The sculpture instantly stuck out to me when we were going over possible images in class. As someone who has always been fascinated by Africa, and it’s history, it only made sense to choose such a powerful work of art that is dedicated to remembering the past.
Nelson Mandela is full of rhetorical devices that are obvious to the viewer. One of the most significant methods used was location. The structure is located in Howick, South Africa. More importantly, it is located in the exact spot that Mandela was arrested over fifty years ago.

Martin Luther King, Jr., born on January 15, 1929, was well known for his nonviolent movement to bring justice and to an end to the segregation of the people in the United States back in the 1950s. With King being the leader of a peaceful protest, it failed to bring equally to the colored people. Martin Luther King, Jr. was labeled as an “outsider” who was “hatred and violence” and that his actions were “unwise and untimely” from the Public Statement by Eight Alabama Clergymen (clergymen). In response, on the day of April 16, 1963, he wrote the Letter from Birmingham Jail to declare and defense his movement was not “unwise and untimely” at all. From time immemorial, the promoters of social justice utilize rhetorical strategies to persuade theirs opponents of theirs claims. The proponents of the movement for civil rights for African Americans have made an intensive use of those strategies to advocate their cause. On April 16, 1963, from the jail of Birmingham, Martin Luther King, Jr. wrote an extensive missive to eight clergymen who had attacked his work for civil rights in a public statement released on April 12, 1963. Martin Luther King, Jr. primarily aimed this letter at those eight leaders of the white Church of the South. However, the eight clergymen's letter and the response from Martin Luther King, Jr. were publicly published. Martin Luther King, Jr. wanted to convince of the utility of his commitment in this particular area at this specific moment. To persuade his readers, Martin Luther King, Jr. predominantly employs Aristotle's three types of persuasion that are appeals to ethos, pathos, and logos. First, he appeals to his own reputation and wisdom. Second, he tries to arouse emotions or sympathy in the readers. Finally, he appeals to logic, supported with evidence and citations from influential thinkers.
Our nation is plagued with problems, and we look to one man to solve them all, president Barack Obama. He plans to solve these in his address to the United Nations General Assembly given on September 24, 2014 in New York City. President Obama gave this speech in response to major issues that were taking place at that time. Some of the issues he talked about were Ebola, which was a deadly disease running rampant through West Africa, the conflict in Ukraine having to do with Russia, and the issue of ISIL terrorist groups. Obama talks about all of these issues to bring up one major goal of this argument. The goal is for the international community to come together to sort out and overcome the problems. On April 20, 1964, Nelson Mandela delivered a speech to the Supreme Court of South Africa. Mandela was being tried for sabotage, high treason, and a conspiracy to overthrow the established government; these charges were brought forth during a time a great discrimination and segregation by whites against Africans. Mandela was a renowned and highly regarded leader in the movement toward desegregation and equality, and to this day is still recognized as a driving force in ending the apartheid in South Africa. Like many great leaders before him, Mandela relied heavily on peaceful political movement rather than riots or any violent acts as he described more in depth within this speech. The purpose of this speech was to convince the court that a majority of the allegations made against him, as well as the African National Congress, were false or twisted, but he also aimed to thrust their movement forward. Using his credibility as a leader for social justice, powerful language, and sensible logic Mandela was able to truly convey their struggle. Although his trial ended with a guilty verdict, he was successful in showing that some of the blame fell onto the government and that change was absolutely important.

Martin Luther King, Jr. used a lot of rhetorical techniques in his “Letter from Birmingham Jail” to respond to the eight Clergymen who criticized his actions of no-violent demonstration in Birmingham calling “Unwise and untimely” (Dr. King 3) they said this about his actions. Also, Martin Luther King used a lot of Logos and ethos in his speech to persuade the reader.
Martin Luther King Jr. overlooked more than two hundred and fifty thousand people of all genders, ages, and races at the nation’s capital on August 28th, 1963. King finally had the opportunity after recurrent protests to inform the country of the cruel and unfair treatment of its citizens. Within his speech he quotes the beginning of the preamble "We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal"(King 277) Throughout this speech, King was able to use Aristotle’s appeals to help persuade the American nation to change its toxic ways and come together to make things better for everyone through passion, rationality, and reliability.
Speeches are a method of persuading people to do something. For Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X, their speeches were to bring equality for the people of color. However, their approaches are different. Consequently, the effects may be different. An example of their contrasting differences is a speech from each, King’s “I Have a Dream” and X’s “The Black Revolution”. Their speeches used pathos, a central metaphor, and a warning, but was presented differently.
Mandela is using the built up passion and anger from years of oppression to instill a resolve in the ANC members and others who are fighting for equality in South Africa.
The sculpture I choose is named Nydia, “The Blind Girl of Pompeii.” When I first seen this I immediately liked it, once again this piece of art spoke to me I could kind of relate to it in a sense. When I first look the name of this piece I thought it read “The Blind Girl of Power,” I instantly started thinking of what type of life she once had and how she is blind and still hold power in her village. I hear once someone loose one of your six senses our other senses become stronger because, we rely on them more to survive. I also heard when someone lose the ability to see there are two senses that get stronger than the others. Hearing and feeling, the ability to hear a further distance and the ability to touch an object and know what it is and the form of it without seeing it.
Attention Getter- Helped bring an end to apartheid and has been a global advocate for human rights. He was a leader of both peaceful protest and armed resistance against white minorities oppressive regime in a racially divided South Africa. His actions landed him in prison for nearly three decades and made him the face of the antiapartheid movement both within his country and internationally.
Barack Obama’s eulogy of Nelson Mandela is a beautiful, passionate speech which uses a range of different techniques: rhetorical, non-verbal, and language styles – to be able to connect and communicate his messaged effectively with his audience. Obama’s ability to combine his strong voice and tone control along with his powerful words create a sense of emotion which cannot be underestimated. Obama understands the means needed to influence others and understands how to execute presentations to benefit his professional and political credibility. It’s unfortunate surrounding the circumstances in which Barack Obama had to present this speech, but it’s a speech that will be known as one of the most powerful, moving, inspiring and passionate tribute to someone who was beloved by millions, and will be missed.
Gandhi’s speech on the eve of his historic march on March 11, 1930, was intended as his last speech to his followers. He highlighted what his followers should do in the event that he was arrested for his crimes. They were to continue to try to attain Swaraj (self-governance, i.e. the country rules itself) with non-violence and truth. Instead of violence, he wanted them to cause civil disobedience by breaking small laws, such as owning and selling illegal salts, as well as purchasing or making them. He wanted the employees of the Government (British rule in India) to stop working in protest, in an attempt to undermine it. Gandhi asked for the taxpayers, and all who were cooperating with the Government to stop cooperating, doing things such as not sending their children to public schools or keeping titles. He also asked for them to have self-confidence in the goal of Swaraj, and to become leaders, while stressing non-violence and truth. Gandhi also asked his followers to continue to follow local leaders; to ensure that leadership at all levels in India was not changed all at once. The art of constructing a sophisticated, well-written piece of work is a feat of it’s own. Proceeding to take that piece and orally presenting it to a audience is on a whole new level. One who excels at this has to be multifaceted with strengths in many areas. Mandela is a prime example of an individual who encompasses the qualities of a brilliant speechwriter and also a speaker in front of the masses. Mandela rallied an entire nation, that was predominantly separated due to the apartheid laws present at the time, using only his voice, spirit, and unwavering determination. After analyzing Mandela’s speech “I am prepared to die”, evidence of ethos, logos, pathos, and rhetorical questions showcases Mandela’s ability as a very established writer and presenter of speeches.
