Response: The novel begins with a character named Robert Walton who wrote letters to his sister about his journey traveling to find adventure in undiscovered land. He tells the reader about how he yearns for company, and questions his choices. But he believes in himself and achieves confidence after his ship sets sail. On its journey the ship ends up being stuck in between icebergs, and the sailors noticed a large creature with a sled, and then the next morning they found another sled with a very ill man on it. The sailors took the man on board, and let him recover. Eventually Walton and the man became acquaintances, and the man began to tell the story about himself.
Aristotle, an ancient Greek philosopher and scientist, conveys, “Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom”. In other words, Aristotle states that the gaining of self-knowledge provides an individual with the ability to know one’s personal gifts and accountabilities. To start one’s adult life a person must pursue the journey of self-discovery to learn in depth about their skills and weaknesses. Individuals must find themselves through the limitations and ordeals that they face during their voyage for self-awareness. It was said that any man to find him would have been assured of fame and glory. The expedition's youthful commander, Zachariah Voorhees also called Zeke, is determined to search for the men, lost now for nearly a decade. As being the captain of the merchant ship for years, he now is planning for a voyage through the Arctic and to discover places never seen before. The story is told from an omniscient point of view where different people's personal feelings and thoughts are revealed in many ways.

Hiding from those who would find him and carry out the wrath of vengeance upon him, the protagonist plans his escape. About to dive in the rancid water and swim for it, a body in the shallows abruptly stops him. The bloated and decomposing corpse pulls the narrator back from his adrenaline-induced frenzy. After a few moments, he settles and reflects, “I thought about him, fog on the lake, insects chirring eerily, and felt the tug of fear, felt the darkness opening up inside me like a set of jaws. Who was he, I wondered, this victim of time and circumstance bobbing sorrowfully in the lake at my back” (193). The narrator can almost envision himself as the man whose corpse is before him. Both deceased from mysterious causes, involved in shady activities, and left to rot in the stagnant lake water, and never to be discovered by the outside world. This marks the point where the main character is the closest he has ever been to death. Although he makes it out alive, the protagonist and his outlook on life are forever changed.
Watching a film, one can easily recognize plot, theme, characterization, etc., but not many realize what basic principle lies behind nearly every story conceived: the hero’s journey. This concept allows for a comprehensive, logical flow throughout a movie. Once the hero’s journey is thoroughly understood, anyone can pick out the elements in nearly every piece. The hero’s journey follows a simple outline. First the hero in question must have a disadvantaged childhood. Next the hero will find a mentor who wisely lays out his/her prophecy. Third the hero will go on a journey, either literal or figurative, to find him/herself. On this journey the hero will be discouraged and nearly quit his/her quest. Finally, the hero will fulfill the prophecy and find his/herself, realizing his/her full potential. This rubric may be easy to spot in epic action films, but if upon close inspection is found in a wide array of genres, some of which are fully surprising.
This novel is told from the first person point of view. George Walton begins narrating the story through his letter to his sister. After he rescues Victor from the ice and nurses him back to health, Victor begins to tell Walton his tale. As the story begins the perspective shifts from Walton's to Victor's point of view while still being told in first person. The first person narration really helps give the reader insight into the true state of the main character's mind, and it is indeed a dark place.

Moreover, the story shows that one should not be extremely rigid and refuse to change their beliefs and that people should be willing to adapt to new customs in order to prevent isolation. Lastly, reader is able to understand that sacrifice is an important part of life and that nothing can be achieved without it. Boats are often used as symbols to represent a journey through life, and like a captain of a boat which is setting sail, the narrator feels that his journey is only just beginning and realizes that everyone is in charge of their own life. Despite the wind that can sometimes blow feverishly and the waves that may slow the journey, the boat should not change its course and is ultimately responsible for completing its voyage.
Even still the unknown beckons forth and the uncertainty of life provides a larger, more enthralling sense of mystery within the Quest journey, and the unsureness every Hero must face creates life-changing decisions and the adornation of peril to path of the Hero sparks the growth in the Hero’s self. Whether it be celestial Thunder speaking of peace beyond understanding, a crazed fortune teller speaking of death, suspicious eyes watching over the, “dead lands” (Eliot, “The Hollow Men” 39) , or a renegade angel choosing to, “Better reign in Hell than serve in Heaven” (Eliot, Paradise Lost 263), no decision is ever made for the hero. What is a hero? To our understanding, a hero is a person who is admired for great or brave acts. Joseph Campbell, an American mythologist, and writer wrote The Odyssey. In this novel he talks about The Heroes Journey which are twelve different stages of adventure known as the Ordinary World, the Call to Adventure, Refusal of the Call, Meeting the Mentor, Crossing the Threshold, Test/Allies/Enemies, Approach to the Inmost Cave, Ordeal, Reward, the Road Back, Resurrection, and the Return With The Elixir. The Odyssey is about a legendary hero named Odysseus, who fought among the Greeks in the battle of Troy and went through the stages of The Heroes Journey. Odysseus lived in Ithaca, Northwest of Greece, with his wife Penelope and son Telemachus.
It was very strange to see another human/carriage on the ice. It was a shock to the crew to see a single man on a sled dragged by dogs through the Northern Sea. Comparing to a well equipped ship, the sled looked like a deadly ride. As mentioned earlier, you could only see the endless ice surrounding them and they couldn?t believe that a single man would travel far from the Big Land. However, the man on the sled was a gigantic stature and most likely he was a strong and brave man.
Thrown into the United State’s army in order to pay for medical school, my father experienced numerous crises. But out of seven years of service, the first crisis story my father shared with me occurred a decade later in his occupational medicine office. One quiet work night Doctor Malik, my father’s boss, chocked on his dinner and could not breathe. Celia, the difficult to work with office nurse heard gurgling in the corresponding room and began to investigate. When she found Doctor Malik, she immediately performed the Heimlich maneuver, saving his life. My father had no direct role in this crisis, but he will always remember that help came from the least expected person. Even though Celia made work difficult in the office, her previous training and readiness to act saved Doctor Malik’s life. Just how Doctor Malik needed the quick response and help from Celia, other crisis situations require quick help from others.
This passage solidifies the theory of the Hero’s Journey that much further. Thomas Foster explains that every story is a quest, and every quest structurally consists of the same five things. There’s the quester, the destination, the reason to go, challenges on the trip there, and the real reason for the journey. He also explains there are other components to the quest that every story seems to have. There is the knight, the dangerous road, the “holy grail”, a dragon, an evil knight, and a princess. When one thinks about it, it’s a little hard to agree that every story is the same, but if each story is at it’s bare bones, they can be fairly similar.
