When first reading Romeo and Juliet, I thought this was such a spectacular play. It caught my attention since it was a couple in love, but their parents didn’t want them together, actions arose and the couple dies. What more could you want in a play? When seeing Romeo + Juliet by Baz Luhrmann, I thought that this film is absurd and that it doesn’t portray what Shakespeare put in his play. The opening scene where there is a gun fight between the Montagues and Capulets was ridiculous and was nothing as to with what was written. Once seeing Franco Zeffirelli’s Romeo and Juliet, my mind was blown because it was how I pictured it when reading the play. It was geared towards Shakespeare’s time with the props, clothes, and scenes that Zeffirelli had chosen to use.
Even though these two films are about the same play, the ways the directors choose to film them make each one a unique film. Such as Zeffirelli uses a more realistic feel as to Luhrmann who uses a postmodern feel in his. But which film is better? How are they different? In this paper, I would like to focus on why Zeffirelli’s film is faithful to the play by exploring the differences between his and Luhrmann’s film of Romeo and Juliet.
In the beginning of each film is where the differences first start off, the scenery is one of the main and major differences between the films. Franco Zeffirelli sticks to the play and has his film take place in Verona, Italy. He uses this since it is the ideal setting as to where the play was set in. While Zeffirelli uses the actual place where Shakespeare has it take place, Baz Luhrmann brings a twist into his film by filming it in present day at Verona Beach, California. Luhrmann uses Verona Beach as his setting because it gives the film ...

...t for a tomb setting, but for Luhrmann’s film it isn’t a surprise that he did this.
With all of the facts given in this paper, it goes to show that Franco Zeffirelli’s film of Romeo and Juliet is truer to Shakespeare’s play. Even though Baz Luhrmann’s film is considered to be exceptional since it has made a lot of money, it doesn’t compare to Zeffirelli’s film when it comes to comparing it to the play. It is given that Zeffirelli’s film is immaculate while Luhrmann is all over the place due to the way he uses his camera. Luhrmann uses the modern view by “creating a highly energetic, primarily visual method of story-telling” (Walker 132). From the way Franco Zeffirelli uses the scenery, opening scenes, clothing, etc it is proven that his film can be seen the be genuine as to what Shakespeare had written in his play and how it could be seen back in his time period.
