The film is really equivalent to the play. The conflict once again begins with a man full of hatred and lonesome elderly man. Saying that the time of Christmas is no more than a waste of time and money. The name of that man is called Mr. Ebenezer Scrooge. Then the night before Christmas his business partner who had died a several years later. then he is also visited by the three spirits like the movie. During the movie the spirit of the past was a woman in a white dress. Unlike the play where the spirit is described as a old man with white hair and unwrinkled: long,muscular arms,but delicate legs and feet. Wears a tunic: lustrous belt cinches.(Dickens,11). Right off the bat, the reader can notice Scrooge is known for being bitter, self absorbed, selfish, and cruel. Over the course of the book, the reader will reevaluate the main character and notice he becomes warmer, joyous, and pleasant. Growth and prosperity have both taken place by the end of the novel.
A Christmas Carol, by Charles Dickens is a tale of the morality changes of a man. The uncharitable, cold heart of the main character, Ebenezer Scrooge, melts with ardent love as he receives visitations from three Christmas spirits who enlighten his soul with wise lessons and bring a warm change to his heart. In the beginning of the novel, Scrooge expresses his vices of greed and cold heartedness by his words and actions, but as the story unfolds, his life is renewed by these Spirits who shed light and truth upon him, resulting in making him become a better man, portraying the virtue of charity.
First, there are many similarities that, without Shakespearean influence, could not be coincidental. Dickens opens his story with “The mention of Marley's funeral brings me back to the point I started from. There is no doubt that Marley was dead. This must be distinctly understood, or nothing wonderful can come of the story I am going to relate. If we were not perfectly convinced that Hamlet's Father died before the play began, there would be nothing more remarkable in his taking a stroll at night, in an easterly wind, upon his own ramparts, than there would be in any other middle-aged gentleman rashly turning out after dark in a breezy spot -- say Saint Paul's Churchyard for instance -- literally to astonish his son's weak mind." This is an obvious reference to Shakespeare’s work in Dickens work already. At the very beginning of each story, there is the death of a character. Each of these deceased characters are the cause and motivation for the actions of the main characters in each story. The death of Marley causes Scrooge to hate Christmas and anything related. He goes out of his way to tell off carolers, tear down decorations, and discourage any Christmas spirit. This continues for many years until finally the ghost of Marley comes back to warn Scrooge. Similarly, Hamlet is depressed and lost with the loss of his father. Too add to his distress, Hamlet cannot understand why his recently widowed mother so acceptingly marries his uncle. The both plays had similarities and differences throughout the play in which demonstrated different creativity from the different directors. The Ghost of Christmas Past makes Scrooge begin to regret his selfishness, and the Ghost of Christmas Present begins to teach him about others. This second Ghost helps to make him realize that money doesn't buy happiness. The Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come, however, teaches the most profound lesson of all: unless he changes, no one will care if Scrooge dies. A Christmas Carol is one of the few traditional Christmas stories I have never read. I already knew the basic story line, but I didn’t really know what was going to happen. I love reading and watching things for the first time. It was fun seeing the different versions and comparing them to the book. There were some differences, escpecially in the Muppets movie, but overall the lesson still shown through. I think it’s a great story that teaches us how to really be grateful and love the people around us.
