My experiences while working in the behavioral health field have played a pivotal role in my decision to pursue a career in Health Informatics. The journey toward choosing to pursue this particular field of study has not been an easy one. I have struggled for several years because I have so many interests such as public health, social work, sociology, art therapy, graphic design and now, health informatics. I felt that by choosing one above all of the others; it meant that I was abandoning the rest. Fortunately, I've come to realize that this is NOT true—my interests in all of these areas are connected. Since Health Informatics is an interdisciplinary study, all of my interests combine to make me a stronger student. My experiences in each of these areas will allow me to lend expertise in multiple areas when and/or if needed.
To that end, I am applying to the Master of Science in Health Informatics (MSHI) program in the department of Biomedical and Health Information Sciences at the University of Illinois at Chicago. I have chosen to pursue an advanced degree in this specialized fi...

In the late 1960s, the first computer systems were installed in hospitals (Murphy,2010). The computer systems started in the basements of hospitals and now are in every nursing unit. Nursing informatics allows for a more efficient and faster delivery of health care. Nursing informatics is a way of keeping patient information properly organized and creating patient care plans.

As we enter the era of technological advances in the healthcare system, nursing informatics has become an essential element in the practice of nursing, and according to the American Nursing Association (2008), the managing of date, information, knowledge and wisdom are relevant to nursing. Thanks to health information technology (HIT), which has a wide-range of tools for improving care quality, there has been a reduction in care disparities, and improvements in care outcomes, including patient and family experience. In Addition, the advances in communication and information sharing has made HIT, a critical instrument for addressing the threats to safety and quality during care transitions, since every nursing action relies on knowledge based
According to the American Health Information Management Association, Health information is the data related to a person’s medical history, including symptoms, diagnoses, procedures, and outcomes. Health information records include patient histories, lab results, x-rays, clinical information, and notes. The data can be analyzed to see how a patient’s health might have changed. I took interest in Health Information Management when it was brought to my attention by a doctor. He told me that is a very interesting field and it is in high demand as they have more jobs than people to fill them. I went home, researched it and now here I am making my entry into the field.
I think that athletic training, and many careers of the sort, are up and coming. There will always be a need for health care workers and they are paid lots of money. Careers I am interested in pursuing as an adult include things somewhere in health care such as sports medicine, athletic training, or a physician. These careers all center on general medicine. I chose the first two because of my love for sports, so if I am not able to play them in the future I still want to play a role in them. Another reason I choose health care is because I enjoy helping people. This is a growing industry because there will always be a need for doctors, physicians, nurses etc. I am already preparing for a career like this in high school because I am signed up to take Health Science courses throughout and also Honors Anatomy as a science. Also for the first two careers I am playing sports which help me to become familiar with the injuries involved in sports and how to treat some of them just from watching. The further education required for the Sports related jobs (will do report from Athletic training point of view) are a 4-year degree from an accredited college, and you usually also need to be certified by the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA).

Two other important training aspects that are required are, experience in supervising other personnel and experience in a health care clinic. This training program is usually offered in community colleges for the length of two years. The two year program is accredi...

Since starting this class, introduction to health care, I have begun to think about what the future holds for me and what I will pursue with my college degree. At this point in time my career goal is to become a physician assistant in orthopedic surgery. I plan on working in a hospital setting where I can continue to learn and practice my profession. Five years after all my schooling and achieving my license, professionally I see myself working at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, New York, which is a teaching hospital. I would be working on and with patients, while still learning as I practice my previous knowledge. I would be seeing patients with injuries such as an ankle sprain, evaluating x-rays, and possibly sitting on and
I have chosen Public Health as my career path because I have a passion for making a difference in people’s lives and helping others achieve their goals. Also, I chose healthcare as a career because health does not only focus on the physical aspects of wellness, but it applies to all areas of wellness, such as, intellectual, social, spiritual, financial, occupational, environmental and emotional wellness. Moreover, Public Health is a challenging, diverse and dynamic field. My philosophy of health is very simple, to prevent, improve and educate the lives of individuals, families, communities and the population. Besides, there is no safer way to touch people’s lives than through public
A key component of public health is that it is always changing with the advent of new technologies. So many discoveries and initiatives have helped improve persons’ environments; inversely, there are threats such as climate change and diseases that progress from endemic to epidemic, presenting daunting challenges to even the most experienced of health professionals. Whether the issue regards sickle cell disease or smoking cessation, everything has some association to one another in the sense I can apply the skills I have learned to combat the barriers that impede one’s quality of life. My time studying public health as an undergrad as well my two years as a public health professional has opened a lot of opportunities for me to succeed in life; both academically and professionally, the various disciplines of public health have changed my perspectives and helped influence me to make a difference for the betterment of those around me. As one with so much interest in public health, I feel I have learned a lot, yet a lot to learn.
In each of these settings it is the responsibility of the health educator to ensure that the information given to the consumer is appropriate for the audience. In the academic setting “health educators” work with school districts to develop lesson plans, evaluate programs, and write proposals for funding to ensure that age appropriate materials are presented to children (Trident, n.d.). In the community setting health educators work with organizations like the CDC and Healthy People 2020 to develop health promotion programs throughout the community. The educational programs can target individual needs or can be used in a group setting. Of the five settings, I think that the Healthcare setting is the most important. Not only does the health professional ensure that the patient receives accurate and appropriate information, they’re also responsible for ensuring that family and the support systems of their patients receive the same information. In the worksite setting, again we see the Health care educator developing plans and programs that meant the needs, improves the working environment and improves the health of the companies ' employees (Trident, n.d.). In each of the settings the Healthcare educator faces a myriad of barriers. Some of those barriers could be age,

Informatics is known as putting data into information (Hebda & Czar, 2013). This is significant to nursing and health care because healthcare workers use informatics everyday. Through the use of technology, data is taken and transcribed into information in healthcare. I will use software to input a client’s information; I can use it to communicate with other healthcare workers and share needed information. Informatics develops my career as a nurse and helps me advance the maximum effort I can put in as a healthcare worker. Whether its using an electronic blood pressure machine or reading x-rays from a computer, informatics plays a significant role in healthcare. Throughout this paper, informatics will be discussed on how it influences nursing, changes the future of health care, and how I will play a role informatics in the future.
