a. A "Good RA" must possess several different skills and abilities in order to productively assist the building and the community residing in the building. An RA should have the ability to be impartial, they should have the ability to form relationships with a diverse group of people as well as being able to handle many responsibilities at the same time. As an RA, one must deal with any conflicts between roommates. They must have the ability to separate their own feelings about the individuals and/or the conflict and find the best solution for everyone involved. Included in this, an RA must have proficient communication skills. Secondly, a Resident Assistant must be able to build relationships. Having this ability can help you connect to residents and show them that you are someone they can trust to talk to. Finally, an RA has many responsibilities. Aside from their position as an RA they have school, family and extracurricular responsibilities. It is important to understand that being an RA is a huge commitment and if someone does not feel as though they have enough time to spend with their duties they should not accept the position. Being able to create balance in your life is vital for being an RA. Other aspects of an RA should include having a good understanding of the Code of Student Conduct, be on good academic standing, and be able to have fun with the job because although you are making important decisions, the job should be a positive experience where you can make friends and have a good time while fulfilling all of the responsibilities they
