Muslims are required to pray five times a day at five specific times. Muslims must pray at dawn, noon, mid-afternoon, sunset, and nightfall. They may pray anywhere they are located but they must face in the direction of the holy city of Mecca. Before Muslims pray they must be clean. Many Muslims elect to attend a mosque which have washing facilities for this ritual.
Charity (Zakat): Muslims are taught equality among all people so they are encouraged to donate to the poor. In fact, charity is considered necessary for purification and spiritual growth. Those who have the financial means are expected to declare a percentage of their wealth to the poor in the community. Others who are not wealthy are encouraged to treat others well and provide good deeds to others. The benefits of Zakat include learning self-discipline, behaving honestly, obeying God, and freeing oneself from greed.
Fasting (Sawm): During the Islamic month of Ramadan, Muslims must fast during the daylight hours. This is designed to bring Muslims closer to God because it is spiritually purifying.
