The use of rhetorical devices allows a writer to emphasize their story. In 1984, George Orwell uses different types of rhetorical devices to bring emphasis to his story. Rhetorical devices in 1984 allow readers to comprehend what the main character is going through and have an insight of his personality. Orwell uses repetition, symbolism and imagery to highlight his story and draw his readers in. Orwell uses repetition throughout his book to emphasize what his main point. In the beginning of the book, Orwell constantly has the phrase “ BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU”. Orwell uses repetition in this phrase, for he is emphasizing how people are spying on the main character. Furthermore, he uses this quote to emphasize how suspicious Winston is. Orwell vocalizes, “ War is peace. Freedom is slavery. Ignorance is strength” (18,29). "War is peace" and "freedom is slavery" are samples of double thinking. Though these phrases are contradictory by definition, the citizens of Oceania accept them both as correct, simultaneously. Big Brother is a symbol of the government. “ Big Brother” is known as the government in which controls what the citizens do, think and desire. Similar to modern-day government, BIG BROTHER is a government in which the people Oceania cannot run away. Orwell also uses telescreen as a symbol as well. Telescreeen is symbolizes which represents control by the government and constant surveillance. The telescreen is a representation of the media used as surveillance to watch the citizens.
