English 12 Period 5 Thematic Analysis Essay: 1984 Topic #1: The party controls the citizen’s actions and thoughts with false information, in order to manipulate them into believing that society is normal. “This process of continuous alteration was applied...to every kind of literature or documentation which might hold any political or ideological significance” This refers to the process of changing the past and how the party is able to manipulate the minds of people through this process. “Who controls the past controls the future. “WAR IS PEACE. FREEDOM IS SLAVERY. IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH.” The slogan is used to convince the citizens that the life they want, is the life they already have. Ultimately, it makes them believe that anything the party says or does is best for Oceania. In the eyes of the people, everything the party does is for their own benefit, when in reality it’s benefiting the government. “BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU” The party uses this slogan to make the people of Oceania feel safe, when, in reality they are constantly in danger. Topic Sentence #2: The strict “laws” set in place in Oceania are used to limit freedom, which gives citizens no opportunities to overthrow the party and in the end they are all stuck in a totalitarian government. “People who had incurred the displeasure of the party simply disappeared and were never heard of again. “Sexual intercours was to be looked on as slightly disgusting minor operation” The party represses natural, human instincts. This is one of their so called laws. In Oceania, there are laws everywhere that are strictly forced upon the citizens, but are not actual laws, since written laws, courts, and constitutions do not exist.
