“WAR IS PEACE. FREEDOM IS SLAVERY. IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH.” The slogan is used to convince the citizens that the life they want, is the life they already have. Ultimately, it makes them believe that anything the party says or does is best for Oceania. In the eyes of the people, everything the party does is for their own benefit, when in reality it’s benefiting the government. “BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU” The party uses this slogan to make the people of Oceania feel safe, when, in reality they are constantly in danger. Topic Sentence #2: The strict “laws” set in place in Oceania are used to limit freedom, which gives citizens no opportunities to overthrow the party and in the end they are all stuck in a totalitarian government. “People who had incurred the displeasure of the party simply disappeared and were never heard of again. “Sexual intercours was to be looked on as slightly disgusting minor operation” The party represses natural, human instincts. This is one of their so called laws. In Oceania, there are laws everywhere that are strictly forced upon the citizens, but are not actual laws, since written laws, courts, and constitutions do not exist. In closing, this book informs us on how the Republicans went crazy and Democrats became useless, and how it’s become a problem. The books unfolds the faults of the Republicans and Democrats “behind the scenes”, and made me more aware of the parties today.
Eventually, the lack of privacy and freedom leads to a suppression of people’s thinking. In 1984, people’s thinking was controlled by lies, invented stories and false information. The stories of the past are all altered and the information is constantly changing every day without any sign of change. The party uses propaganda as a deadly weapon to control its citizens’ minds.
In discussing the problems surrounding the issue of factionalism in American society, James Madison concluded in Federalist #10, "The inference to which we are brought is that the causes of cannot be removed and that relief is only to be sought in the means of controlling its effects." (Federalist Papers 1999, 75) In many ways, the nature of American politics has revolved around this question since our country's birth. What is the relationship between parties and government? Should the party serve as an intermediary between the populace and government, and how should a government respond to disparate ideas espoused by the factions inherent to a free society. This paper will discuss the political evolution that has revolved around this question, examining different "regimes" and how they attempted to reconcile the relationship between power and the corresponding role of the people. Beginning with the Federalists themselves, we will trace this evolution until we reach the contemporary period, where we find a political climate described as "interest-group liberalism." Eventually this paper will seek to determine which has been the most beneficial, and which is ultimately preferable.

The resentment the people hold for the enemy comes from the government’s war which distracts the people from the government’s actions towards themselves. The ploys the government uses the war for help them achieve their goals by controlling the citizens.
The government system of Oceania is a totalitarian state. It is controlled by a group known as “The Party.” The Party claims to be headed by an entity known as “Big Brother,” though no one has ever seen him aside from in propaganda. The ideological basis of The Party is referred to as INGSOC. The three tenants of INGSOC are “WAR IS PEACE [.] FREEDOM IS SLAVERY [.] IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH” (Orwell, 6). The Party is split into two components, the Inner Party, and the Outer Party. The Inner Party - comprised of less than 2% of the population – is the upper ruling class that controls everything. The Outer Party functions as the middle class and works as lower level employees at the four Ministries of The Party. The majority of the population, known as the Proles (short for “proletariats”), are the poor working class.
In order for the Party to survive in 1984, the people of Oceania must be dehumanized. This cruelty is achieved by removing the people's freedom of thought and emotion, to the point of elimination of all love and connections to everything but the Party. George Orwell drew inspiration from regimes such as Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia. These units of government, including Oceania, live in a fragile balance of power, in which total control is necessary for survival.
Unlike our government in the United States, we actually have freedom of speech, press and petition unlike in 1984 where you could be killed for speaking and acting what is not in the regulations and could be sent to room 101 and sent to the labor camps where bad things happen to you. “We’re getting the language into its final shape- the shape it’s going to have when nobody speaks anything else. When we’ve finished with it, people like you will have to learn it all over again. You think, I dare say, that our chief job is inventing new words. But not a bit of it! We’re cutting the language down to the bone. The Eleventh Edition won’t contain the language down to the bone. The Eleventh Edition won’t contain a single word that will become obsolete before the year 2050” (51). The quote explains the kind of power that Big Brother can expose to the citizens of Oceania and goes to show that changing the language and not being able to speak in a certain way takes away the number one right people have and that is to free speech. Just like the United States does and I am pretty sure the rest of the world does, there should be a clear line between too much government control over to little government control. When the government starts having too much control is when they start going above and beyond the citizen’s health and safety. A quote from 1984 states that “war is peace. Freedom is slavery. Ignorance is strength.” Which basically explains that the only way to have peace is to start a war, freedom is slavery because in 1984 being your own person and being free was a crime so was having your own opinion because of all the propaganda they tried forcing down everyone’s threats the party expects you to act and think in a certain way. Ignorance is strength because in the world of 1984 rebelling was the worst thing you could do, being
Orwell shows the Party has taken strict measures in order to maintain the established status quo that suppresses the majority of Oceania. They have shaped and constructed history so that children grow up as servants to the party. Propaganda stating how rich and prosperous Oceania is the news of the day even though real conditions show buildings are dilapidated and resources are sparse.

“Ignorance is strength” is true considering the fact that the party is outnumbered by the rest of the population, especially the proles. The proles have the least amount of knowledge as to what is actually going on in their world, which is why the Party easily gets away with all of their manipulative tactics. Since the proles are disregarded from society, but more notably, are unbothered by the Party, they have no desire to rebel against the strict hierarchical structure imposed by Big Brother. The Party makes their own reality by holding the power to alter the past in whatever way they please and the people do not have the mindset to object. “But by far the more important reason for the readjustment of the past is the need to safeguard the infallibility of the Party." This explains why manipulation is crucial for the Party to stay in absolute power. They want the masses to believe what they are told in spite of what they might think otherwise. Doublethink is the most effective way the party manipulates their people to avoid free thinking. Doublehink is a practice that keeps individuals free of their own thoughts. This is how the Party gets away with all the lying they do in the Ministry of Truth. Through the propagandas and the Ministry of Truth, the Party also define what is true and what is false. For Big Brother to stay in control there cannot be individual identity. The ‘Party’ strives to strip away people's identities to have power over a group of emotionless individuals. Big Brother believes that the past must be controlled in order to regulate the present. Since Big Brother “is in control of the present” ( 20 ), they decide how everyone lives their everyday lives. The reason why the Party breaks links between the past from the present is clear. Therefore, citizens will fail to remember their individual identities from the past, and way of life was far better than is it now. “Oceania” lacks diversity, all their citizens are thought to be like emotionless robots. They all live in the same style apartment buildings, wear plain clothes, and eat stale food, everyone has to be uniform. This uniformity causes their citizens to act how they are told to which is the reason for their uniqueness and lack of personal identity. All over Oceania are posters reminding their citizens “BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING [THEM]” ( ). This is the ‘Party's’ way of telling citizens there is never a time they can be alone or be by themselves. They always have to act in accordance to how the party expects them to. To make sure of this, the government is constantly monitoring their citizen via ‘telescreens’ that are found in every room. Psychological manipulation the Party uses on the citizens is one of the first themes Orwell exposes in this dystopian society. The Party maintains this manipulation by constantly overwhelming citizens with useless information and propaganda.
Written in capital letters in the book itself, this is obviously a key slogan for the government in power and one which instils fear if taken literally, which of course is the way in which it is intended. The idea that the party is always watching, even inside people's homes depicts totalitarianism in one of its highest forms, more so than even the Nazi regime managed to achieve.
