New York City the 1970s was home to the poorest residents. Blacks, Puerto Ricans, and Italian survived by committing crimes. There was the Mafia, which was an Italian mob. Teens were involved in gangs. Whites were afraid of the rise and fall of crime. Crimes were starting to slowly fade out in neighborhoods after police and Giuliani took action. 1970s Mafia leader Joseph Colombo was sealed in a war with Joey Gallo a member of the mafia. Gallo associated himself with black gangsters from Brooklyn while serving time in prison. For conspiracy and attempted extortion and was released early. Castellano was the head of the Gambino crime family biggest in New York. Sam Gravano was once Gotti close lieutenant. Gravano was a prosecution star witness. He was seen on government surveillance tapes. Sam Gravano helped planed the Castellano assassination. There were about 30 gangers mostly teenagers that were terrorizing Bronx and Brooklyn. savage skulls and the black spades were the gangs in the south Bronx. July 1976 to July 1977 was Summer Sam. David Berkowitz stared killing women and sometimes their boy friends too. Mike Lauria first victim’s father, 18-year-old Donna Laura was killed in front of her building in the Bronx. Berkowitz did not stop there; he has hit five more times. Altogether nine people have been shot and five been killed. David Berkowitz was convicted to be the son of Sam. East New York Massive power outage 1977. Bronx and Brooklyn were hit the hardest. People were going insane, stealing and putting graffiti on the walls. Looters burn down buildings and trashed stores. Arrest was made because of all the things going on. The City lost three hundred million that day.
