ENERGY, WATER & WASTE IN THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT:
Brickworks waste in the built environment, its possible re-use & recycling methods in the South African context.

BACKGROUND:
The Regionalist structural design found in the Pretoria region is characterized by the use of clay brickwork for load bearing walls. Fisher Le Roux & Mare (1998: 124-140) discusses the reasons why clay bricks are so predominant in the residential architecture of Pretoria, which he refers to as the Third Vernacular of South Africa. The first and second being the Cape Dutch & Veranda styles. This practice of brickwork was influenced by several factors. Firstly the material had been widely obtainable in the region, for example when Kirkness established brickworks on the southern side of Muckleneuk Hill (Fisher et al 1998: 129). The “un pretentiousness” of clay brickwork also appealed to the predominantly Protestant Afrikaner, at that time, population of Pretoria. The financial viability of the use of clay brickwork also appealed to the Afrikaner population of the region. Moreover the character of the Pretoria populous and the regional architecture that established had a “strong... affinity for the natural, whether in landscape or the more subtle rootedness to the soil...” (Fisher et al 1998: 138) and the use of clay in bricks encompassed this connection with the milieu. As well as the aesthetic and colour of clay bricks allowed a connection with the natural environment. This paper will present an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) of a proposed construction project of a new recycling center in a rural area. The proposed project is to be built in a nonattainment area. The EIS will address land-use and development, social and neighborhood effects, economic factors, air quality, noise, and water resources as it relates to the proposed project. Included in the process will be three alternatives as well as a no build alternative. The Environmental Impact Statement will provide a detailed scoping of the project along with the alternatives that will ensure all potential impacts are addressed prior to project approval.

Waste management is the operation of how waste materials are handled. The affair of waste management is relevant to everyone world-wide. Wastes are materials that have no further economic use, and when disposed of, are hazardous to humans and the environment. Wastes include solid waste, liquid wastes, and air pollutants created by humans and cannot be naturally recycled. Current waste management techniques need to be completely overhauled because funding in government budget is not enough to meet standards, landfills are reaching their maximum capacity worldwide, and nuclear waste storage must be handled correctly. Waste management has been a highly thought about complication for global authorities. Due to
Florida International University recognizes its contribution to the accumulation of waste considering that it produces about seven million pounds of waste each year (Figueroa, 2010). Unlike other universities that still remain adamant in investing on green practices, FIU has, “governed by the State of Florida under Florida Statute 403.714 and The Florida Solid Waste Management Act of 1988” (FIU, 2011), established its own internal ‘green machine’ or solid waste and environmental protection system via the FIU Custodial Services Office. The university’s efforts in ensuring efficient solid waste management even “far exceeds the minimum standards” (FIU, 2011) required by law. What makes the solid waste management efforts of the university one-of-a kind is the establishment of a “single stream recycling program which means that all recyclable items can be placed into one bin and do not have to be sorted” (FIU, 2011). Purpose: The main objective for my presentation is to show the audience what recycling is and how we can cut down on landfills.
Nowadays, it will not be inept to inform that the universe is going over a construction boom. In truth, in the past few decades an entire affair of construction has altered dramatically like all other aspects of life. Currently, construction is no more just about keeping one brick above the other, but a diverse more than that. With the present scenario, the construction work encompasses all the aspects of construction like, performance, optimization, developing and designing. As an outcome, construction chemicals have become an essential part of the world construction industry. These chemicals are typically utilized to impart different properties into the layout.
Context- The purpose of this presentation is to inform my fellow classmates about the main concepts that inspire African Architecture and to show how these concepts can have effective applications in modern society.

Sustainable buildings are becoming somewhat of a necessity in the world today. As the demand for green building develops, so does the demand for green building materials. Just as the old techniques and building materials seem to disappear in the assembly of things, they are now making a come back. Green building focuses on the efficiency of major resources like water and energy. As the cost for sustainable materials and products are on the decline, building green seems to be the most cost effective kind of design and construction. Looking specifically at green materials and their impact on the production of structures, it is evident that they are a prime choice for building material. The use of green materials should be promoted because they are better for the environment, more healthful for the consumer, and better for the economy.

As Nuttgens eloquently expressed, architecture is a “vital…expression of the experience of mankind.” It is more than just buildings used for storage, housing, religious purposes, simple functionality; it is a great manifestation of the commonality of man, the great connecting factor of humankind. However, it can be argued that the ancient and classic forms or architecture are in essence more “profound…lasting… [and] inexhaustible” than those of their modern counterparts, because of some key differences in the ways ancient and modern architecture are practiced.
