America is viewed by its residences in many different perspectives it can be a nightmare to be able to survive in this country, or in an instant you can become a greater power house to our country. In America many people gain power and respect by the money they have and the connections they have made, in this perspective you can live wealthy and happy until the day you die. America's basis is on freedom and is a wonderful place to be whether your in the north or south, but America is the same as a whole and each individual part of America is different.
Some different parts about America are high and lower class citizens. It is hard to be a lower class citizen, living in a high crime neighborhood trying to earn money for college and support your family at the same time. I think you have to work harder than a person more "well off" because we can get stuff just handed to us if we ask for it rather than have to work hard for it. I know that I am very lucky to have my parents that can fully support me in everything I do. They make me want to be like them for my own kids if I ever decide to have any children in the far future. I know that my life is a lot easier than other peoples life's because I haven't always lived in the nicest environment. If I ever do have children I want to make sure they grow up in a good environment and both my spouse and myself are ready for parenting.
I don't want my kids living where I used to live in South Carolina. I grew up in S.C. at a small town called Monks Corner and my family bred horses for a living. It made an ok living and it was nice living in the country, but I always wanted to live in a city and meet new people. When I was around 11 I wanted to experience more in the world; I knew I was still really young, it's just I was adventurous about my world around me. South Carolina had a very diverse community and it was reflected in the school system as well. The school was called Berkeley Middle School and is very different from George Mason High School.
All individuals have different paths and life goals. It is true that individuals may start out with more advantages than others, but it should not be used as a limitation to others. Mantsios lists several realities discussing the different levels of opportunity for Americans. In these realities, he describes that wealth and our economic status is important in order to reach success. In one of his realities, Mantsios discussed the privileges within inheritance laws stating: “…Americans do not have an equal opportunity to succeed, […]. Inheritance laws provide built-in privileges to the offspring of the wealthy and add to the likelihood of their economic success while handicapping the chances for everyone else” (392). It appears as if he only believes success comes out of extreme wealth, and if someone is not, they’re disadvantaged and will ultimately be less successful than others. Mantsios talks only in extremes; he discusses the very rich, the very poor and how each affects each other, while simultaneously arguing that there is little to no chance for those in the middle or lower class to grow and become successful. In contrast, Jay-Z discusses how he did not let the obstacles he faced, or his economic status limit him. He is quoted saying, “don’t let [society] diminish your accomplishment or dim your shine” (Packer 361). Here, he is taking a much more positive approach, stating that individuals should not limit their success based on their social class. Class should not be a tool used to limit individuals and their success. To say that an individual born into the upper class will just coast through life without hardship is untrue. In the same respect, to say that an individual born into lower or middle class will have no chance at success, is just as untrue. We all face different levels of hardship in life, therefore condemning an individual because they have a leg up or down in
According to Gregory Mantsios many American people believed that the classes in the United States were irrelevant, that we equally reside(ed) in a middle class nation, that we were all getting richer, and that everyone has an opportunity to succeed in life. But what many believed, was far from the truth. In reality the middle class of the United States receives a very small amount of the nation's wealth, and sixty percent of America's population receives less than 6 percent of the nation's wealth, while the top 1 percent of the American population receives 34 percent of the total national wealth. In the article Class in America ( 2009), written by Gregory Mantsios informs us that there are some huge differences that exist between the classes of America, especially the wealthy and the poor. After
America, often called land of the free, opportunity, but what truly is America has someone actually contemplated it? Well there are certain things that might define America, for example America for some people could be the land of opportunity, There are many reasons why different types of people all across the world might pursue the land of opportunity, America. That one person leaving their home land might be a parent, a parent looking to pursue a better life for their children. A better life than the one they lived. To allow their children to actually follow their dreams and hopes, to be someone in life. Where in America there is truly no limits to what one might become in life, or what one will do with the limitless opportunities.
Growing up in The United States, people are given this idea of an American Dream. Almost every child is raised to believe they can become and do anything they want to do, if one works hard enough. However, a majority of people believe that there is a separation of class in American society. Gregory Mantsios author of “Class in America-2009” believes that Americans do not exchange thoughts about class division, although most of people are placed in their own set cluster of wealth. Also political officials are trying to get followers by trying to try to appeal to the bulk of the population, or the middle class, in order to get more supporters. An interesting myth that Mantsios makes in his essay is how Americans don’t have equal opportunities.
The United States of America has been touted as the land of opportunity. The American dream was the reason many immigrants moved to this nation, all hoping to rise from rags to riches. Although likely at some point, the current situation exudes a different result. The problem in the United States is that there is a class divide that gives advantage to those who already have sufficient lifestyles over those who constantly face adversity. This situation causes a loop where the children of the educated get educated while those without are never given the opportunity to receive.
It is easier for the upper social class to achieve the American dream rather than the lower class due to many reasons.
The United States is the land of opportunity but we will most likely never reach social equality, which will always be a problem for people in the lower classes. I do think it is harder for children in the lower classes to succeed in school since they have to learn how to blend in with the middle class and the social norms of the middle class on top of getting their diploma or degree. I believe Jay MacLeod did a great job in explaining his theories with his research findings. My views on reaching success in life are very traditional, but
Using these definitions America is the land of wealth and opportunity. People from all over the world have come to these shores to start a new life and where able improve themselves. This is not to say that everyone has the same amount of wealth or the same opportunities but in general and on average there is more wealth and opportunity here than elsewhere in the world.
America the home the free and the brave is a term coined by past generations as a well known saying that patriots hold true, however not all people feel that is a true statement. America a place known for its freedom of speech, right to bear arms and the freedom to be whomever you want, however, for some the American dream is not a reality privileged to all. Millions of people walk the streets of American suburbs and shuffling cities everyday, some just stopping at their local corner store or hustling to get to their place of employment. Many minorities think of the start of their day to be an everyday struggle that is filled with a daily reminder of prejudicial viewpoints, racial profiling and competition at every corner they turn. America is not so kind to everyone, minorities are often the cause of media exploitation, false criminal statistics and mass media hype.
... that they affect one another. A person who lives by a lower income will not have that mines and chances of become wealthy. A person in the other spectrum, which is born into a higher class, will most likely stay wealth. This leads to an endless cycle of generations staying within the working class realm. The likely hood of a person moving up a class is rare but it does exist. People need to be pushed and have a drive to keep going and to keep trying. That is why we are told we have an equal chance in life so we can all strive for better even though in reality we do not all have an equal chance. But nonetheless people should try to become successful even if they never make it in life because a life without purpose, goals, or ambitions is a meaningless life. As humans we need a reason to live, another day for people to take advantage and make the best of it.
As a resident of Montgomery County I am privileged to be a student of a school system that is highly ranked nationwide. I am privileged to have grown up with two assiduous parents, who overcame the language barrier and provided for me regardless of the circumstances. Unfortunately not everyone that grows up in the greater Washington area is this privileged. Many have to deal with the absence of one or both of their parents, learning disabilities, or lack of resources for efficiently completing school assignments. Which is why I believe that the American Dream varies through each individual. You cannot compare yourself to anyone because everyone has to cope with different limitations. I believe that it is not limited or defined by how large or small your level of success is, or by how intelligent an individual is, but measured by the dedication and hard work regardless of any circumstances. It is being able to look back five, ten, fifteen years and acknowledge how many obstacles were overcome, how many pessimists were proven wrong, and how far from the beginning one has
America is one of the wealthiest nations on earth with having a high inequality than other industrialized country. Inequality exists in income, wealth, power and education. Persons who are legally and socially poor in the United states tend to stay in a cycle through life, not always by choice but because they are given fewer opportunities, education and tools to achieve success. Poverty class has a much larger income gap than the upper class, the American Dream is lessens through opportunity and is shown through statistics.
“America is the land of opportunity. If I work hard enough, I can be whatever I want to be. If I truly want something, I can get it. I will work hard and grow up to be whatever it is that makes me happy. The sky is the limit. These statements portray the American dream. Though the American dream seems a little more difficult to attain when the American dreaming is a member of a minority group living in poverty”. This quotation by author, Philip M. Deutsch thoroughly sums up the entirety of my paper. Deutsch starts out by listing several somewhat cliché statements summarizing the classic American’s view of the American dream; the hope of starting with nothing and ending up on top. However, he continues by revealing that the American dream is not as easily made a reality for those from other countries. This paper explores why it is easier for those born in America to attain prosperity in the United States. This paper will discuss the reasons immigrants have a harder time achieving the
American Dream: what is your definition of it? Does it involve money? Does it involve love? Does it involve healthiness? People have different definitions of what they would want in their "American Dream." First of all, let's define American Dream. American Dream is what you would consider a "perfect life." It can be full of happiness, money, love, food, cars, whatever you desire; everyone has a different opinion. One person?s American Dream may be totally different from someone else?s; that is what makes us all individuals. Robert Wuthnow writes about different people?s American Dream in his essay "Having It All." Throughout Wuthnow's essay, it seems that not too many people are truly living out their American Dream. Many complain about having to work to much, not enough time with the family, not enough pay, and so on. My American Dream would include a good job and lots of money, spare time for my family and I, and most importantly, healthiness.
“I have a dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. I have a dream today.” (MLK) These are the words of Martin Luther King himself. In 1963, Martin Luther King Jr. said that he too had a dream, and I would consider it a great view of the American Dream. But, what if his dream was something totally different than someone else’s dream? Is the American Dream different than it use to be, or is it changing? These are questions that we must all ask ourselves as we live here in America. I believe that education, business, and technology are major aspects that drive the American Dream, and that the American Dream is changing for the worst for middle and lower class Americans.
