Description: PTSD is an anxiety disorder that occurs after an individual has experienced a traumatizing event Symptoms of PTSD: • Having a hard time expressing feelings/emotions • Avoiding situations that remind them of the traumatic experience • Feeling jittery and constantly on the lookout • Reliving the memories of the traumatizing experience Common characteristics/emotions of an individual with PTSD: • Sadness or Depression • Fear or anxiety • Anger and irritability • Guilt and shame • Memory loss Incidence/Prevalence: The incidence rate for PTSD is 3.6% meaning that 1 in 27 Americans develop this disorder every year. However, the prevalence rate for PTSD is 1.9% (1 in 52 Americans).
