Approximately eighteen point million American adults or about nine point five percent of the U.S population age eighteen and older has depression. To break this down a bit more, twelve point four million woman and six point four men in the U.S are affected by depression. Depression is a very broad illness that many people are dealing with today. There are many different types and ways of dealing with depression, and helping others through it. When depressed, people lose all interest in group activities, and stay at home and mope around (Do, Jan 19th, 2011).when living with, or even being best friends with someone who is depressed it can be hard to handle and at times overwhelming. Depression has something to do with a chemical imbalance within the brain that causes chronic depression (Do, Jan 19th, 2011). Due to the imbalance of destructive energy, the more there is the stronger the negative energy (Do, Jan 19th, 2011). Depression is an illness that comes and goes. Most people who have major depression will be affected once a month. Some signs of depression to look for are weight gain, increased appetite, sleeping excessively, and sensitivity to rejection (Melinda, 2001-2010). These signs can also be just the opposite; weight loss, and a decrease in appetite, and a lack of sleep. To understand and deal with depression, there are a few things people should know, as in the types along with the definitions, signs and symptoms of men and women and last, the treatments for depression. When it comes to depression there are a couple different types, and definitions that people may have. In addition, not sleeping enough can definitely make people irritable and stressed and can make it harder for them to manage their emotions (Kemper,... ... middle of paper ... ...on them, causing them to become depressed as well. Depression strikes all age groups. Getting treatment can be different for everyone. Antidepressants and symptoms of depression vary depending on the person. Depression is a mood people have that affects many things for about two weeks, or longer. As read earlier, there are no testing that can be done to determine of one is depressed or not, but there are diagnostic interviews that can be done. While getting treatment nutrition comes in handy again because it is important to have a meal or snack when taking medicines. In contrast to the normal experiences of sadness or passing moods, depression is extreme and persistent and can interfere significantly with an individual’s ability to function (Michele, 1-1-05). People point to a chronic anger pattern that is emotionally and physiologically damaging (Matthew, 2000).
