There are hundreds of detectives and cops around the world. Each one has a different area that they like to work in. And each one of these people want to serve justice. But the real question is, how far would someone go to serve justice? Would someone die while trying their hardest? What about going so far as to lose a friend or family member? What about becoming a murderer in order to ensure justice?
In the movie 21 Jump Street, Schmidt and Jenko are best friends and cops. They are put on a mission to find the supplier of a new drug at a high school. The friends try and get close to the dealer in order to meet the supplier and arrest him. When they are getting ready, the guys promise each other that they would risk their lives for each other. When they go try to arrest the supplier, a firefight breaks out and Jenko jumps in front of two bullets for his friend. After this Schmidt says he would take a bullet any day for him. So both characters would die in order to serve justice. Charley Hill in the novel The Rescue Artist, is an art detective. The Scream, a painting worth more than one million dollars, is stolen. The police knew who to put on the case immediately. They called Hill, who of course had already heard about the robbery and had started investigating on his own. He started tracking down a man who he knew had pulled off one of the biggest art thefts in history. This man was Martin Cahill, an Irish gangster and extremely dangerous. “In 1978, seven years before the theft of the Scream, a brutal Irish gangster named Martin Cahill had pulled off what was then the biggest are theft in history.” (Dolnick 56) Hill finds the thieves, Johnsen and Grydal. Two men on a crosswalk trapped and shot at another man also in the street. Bill hid behind a car and called the police while the men tried to get away. He followed the car they drove to an alley where he soon realizes was where they hid their guns. The guns were retrieved and one man arrested, the other got away. He had his gun ready and thought he could shoot the men, but decided that he would call for help and pursue the men in his car. He was willing to shoot two men in order to make sure justice was served.
In conclusion, people all over the world, not just police officers or detectives, are trying to make the world a better place to live by making sure justice is served in many different ways.
Happening in today’s society, there have been countless number of citizens being killed by law enforcement. Some situations may not cause for force and others may. This case can be a reference in regards to making sure that the force you use is appropriate for the situation. As for the justice system, it is all about being fair and listening to both sides and issuing out the right punishment if there is any. Many people in today’s time needs to get educated when it comes to the reason behind why law enforcement uses force to handle the situations they have to deal with. It is a myth to believe that an officers job is spend fighting dangerous crimes, in reality officers spend more time handing smaller cases. For example, police officers spend a lot of time doing daily tasks such as giving speeding tickets and being mediators in disputes (Kappeler & Potter, 2005). Handing out speeding tickers and handling minor disputes are far from fighting crime. Police officers spend more time doing preventive measures (Kappeler & Potter, 2005). Preventive measures involve officers intervening to prevent further altercations. Victor Kappeler and Gary Potter discussed the myth of crime fighting as invalid and misleading notions of an officer’s employment.
