Christian Faith Tested by Science

Science has become a very strong passion of mine over the years. After learning about the theory of evolution in the eighth grade, I realized that there were going to be numerous times my Christian beliefs would be tested. Now, as a biology major, I know that my faith will be tested several throughout my life times but also I’ve also gained a deeper knowledge in God’s word. Along with science, serving in the military has also been a very strong passion of mine. Ever since elementary school I knew that I wanted to serve my country in the military. Because of these two passions, my Christian faith will be tested by the two cultures I will experience in my career path. The first culture I will experience is in the science field, and there has been a conflict between science and religion for years. The second culture is the military culture, which will be even more difficult to express my faith because of the requirement to subject to authorities. It is quite difficult to discuss the role that religion should play in the work place.

The first question to answer is how much of a role should faith play in the workplace? Blakemore focuses on the expression of faith in the healthcare field. She talks about how nurses in the UK are afraid to even mention anything along lines of religion. Even if they don’t push their religion onto anyone else, the patient could misinterpret their actions. The nurses should “[be] aware and sensitive of the religious or spiritual needs of a patient” (Blakemore 11). This works well in the medical field because the welfare of the patient is the most important aspect of the job. There were cases in the UK where workers were demanded to remove their crosses.
