Automobile Analysis: Volvo

Volvo’s have been claimed to be the safest motorcars on the road, but are they more than just safe, and what I mean is, can they also be entertaining and fun? I have driven several different Volvo models in the last few years, some SUV’s, a couple of convertibles, even some of their impressive luxuries sedans, but I have never really found any of them to be completely entertaining. The only one that I had not spent time with was the C30 and although I had a good look when it arrived on our shores, I was not overly impressed. It had something to do with its clinical nature, it is all sterile and you feel as though by just looking at it you may be infecting it. But to make things fair I spent two weeks with two versions of the C30 now and here is a surprising conclusion. The C30 breaks the mould of Volvo’s sterile stigma and is a fun, entertaining and spirited and not only with the C30 2.5T R-D, but with the 2.0 Auto guise as well. On our test sheet the chassis and suspension scored high on both models and what I enjoyed most is that it is firm, but also forgiving and communicative as well. The suspension compliments the ride very nicely and instils a fair amount of confidence in a turn. This obviously bodes well for steering and handling which is also well weighted, maybe a little heavy at times, but by the same token rather good. On a switchback test the C30 2.5T was even more impressive and popped out at speeds better than some Quattro and AWD models have managed with its predictable understeer, and when pushed to the tyres limits the Dynamic Stability Control is not anything like the Ref in the WorldCup final penalising you, it just kind of nudges you in the right direction. The 107kW 2.0 litre 4-cylinder petro... ... middle of paper ... ... is the better looker, and draws just the right amount of attention with its dual trumpets out the back, and low slung, aggressive stance. When I first saw the C30 I was a little confused about the rear window that acts as the hatch lid, and those massive doors that don’t want to stay open but none of that really matters as most kids will tell you, it still looks good. Overall the C30 has broken the mould and strayed from Volvo’s pristine and sterile heritage but at the same time showed that men in white coats at the Swedish Volvo Holdings still have a child nature within them, and some things just need to be freed. As of the 2nd of August 2010, Zhejiang Geely Holdings of China has taking over the Volvo Car Corporation in a 100% deal from Ford, and although that is a good thing economically, I hope that the C30, and Volvo remain the company they have always been.
