Born in 1812 Charles Dickens grew up in a small town in London. Dickens grew up in a poor family. His family, sent to debtors∙ jail before he became old enough to fend for himself, convinced him to find work and stay out of the jail. Dickens worked anywhere, from law offices to newspapers as a young child. (∜New Standard Encyclopedia∠D-155) A Christmas Carol, written by Dickens, has changed many things in the world today, especially Christmas traditions and religion. Dickens worked in many places as a young child and when his family wasn∙t in jail, if the family could afford it Dickens went to school. Dickens∙ parents being thrown in jail left him to fend for himself, he found work in first a law office where he filed and did other simple jobs around the office. Working in law offices and other offices like newspaper editing room, Dickens taught himself to read and write with a little help from the adults in the office. When Dickens worked at the newspaper he would occasionally write a column or a cartoon for the newspaper and soon became a very well known newspaper reporter. From about the time that Dickens was eleven or twelve years old to the time that he was seventeen or eighteen he went from a poor uneducated young boy to a well educated well known reporter. Dickens was concerned about the working and living conditions during the Industrial Revolution, when the book was written. These are reflected in Ebenezer Scrooge.

A Christmas Carol looks like it was written for a young kid because of the way the book was set up. The book is not an easy book for adults to stay interested in. The book starts out in a sad lonely way, when it is suppose to be about Christmas. Scrooge’s name brings no joy to anyone. He is known to be an evil person. Dickens was a great man. He wanted to make this book to satisfy not only him but all of his audience. Did you know that the famous writer, Charles Dickens, had a very hard beginning in life? Charles father got sent to prison for not paying all hid bills and left the family on their own. Charles quit school and had to work, He wrote the classic book “The Christmas Carol” which was turned into a movie. One movie came out in 1984 and in 2009 it wasn't a regular movie it was an animated movie. There are many similarities and differences in the book and the movie made in 2009.

In Charles’ early life his father got arrested for debt in 1824, and was sent to the Marshalsea Prison in Southwark. Charles was his father’s messenger to the family since John couldn’t communicate behind bars, but Charles worked at the Warren’s Blacking Factory. Three years after that he became a clerk of an attorney. In 1830 he fell in love with a lady named Maria Beadnell.
Charles Dickens' father, John, made little money working as a clerk in England's Navy Pay Office (Coles 564). John's low salary, combined with a severe spending problem, would eventually land him in debt. As a consequence, John was placed into debtors' prison. As was the custom of the time, John was forced to bring his family along with him (Coles 564). It was 1824 and young Dickens was only 12 years old (Coles 564). To help his father out of debt, Charles worked under the horrible conditions of a blacking factory (Collins 15). According to Edmund Spenser, quoted in Phillip Collins' Dickens and Crime, these events "lie behind the loneliness, disgrace, and outlawry which pervade all his novels" (15). Collins concurs:

When I think of Charles Dickens I instantly remember that famous quote “Please sir I want some more” from the little boy in Oliver Twist. During Charles Dickens lifetime he became known all over the world for his short stories, plays, novellas, novels, fiction and non-fiction stories. His remarkable characters, mastery of prose in the telling of their lives, and his depictions of the social classes, mores and values of his times were well know all over. In the spirit of the holiday season I read one of his short stories called “The Christmas Goblins” which teaches a valuable lesson.
