On the first day at my new job right after graduation, the Vice President asked me why I became a structural engineer. My answer was “I want to contribute to society and my local community using my strengths in numbers and analytical thinking.” This answer has never changed to this day.
I moved to this country when I was 18 years old. My parents were very passionate about providing me and my sister with the best opportunities available even above their comfort zone. They let me and my sister move to the United States because this is the country of opportunities. The United States is also the country with the best economy in the world still today. There is no question in my mind that this is the country in which I want to continue to live, and continue to pursue my dreams including receiving proper and best education for business and building my successful career in business.
I am always looking for new challenges because I believe that passion comes from challenges and passion is what I want to retain throughout my career. When I started working in the summer of 2008, the economy was strong enough to support my decision to become a structural engineer. While giving my 100% to be a dedicated and an outstanding asset to the company, I have developed a solid foundation in teamwork, analytical reasoning and problem solving skills by coordinating effectively with team members, conveying information between clients and engineers, providing the best structural design possible, resolving issues and conflicts between the architect’s vision and structural design with innovative solutions, and managing and accurately completing multiple tasks concurrently under time pressure. Education has always been a primary concern for my parents, who taught me that if I need to succeed in life, I have to be educated. Following their guide, I have always valued and tried to get the most of any educational opportunity I have had. Having grown up in a business family, I have always been interested in focusing my career in the business field. My Mother and Father own their own company, and they are constantly talking about business, which has inspired me to follow their path. When my parents retire, they want me to carry on their legacy. For this reason, I have decided to pursue my studies in the field of Business and Leadership at Marylhurst University. I want to pursue a well-rounded education at this established university where I also can have life experiences in the outside world, which will ultimately help me to become a successful leader in our family business.
When deciding on what career best suited me, I found myself considering my role as a global citizen. As an inhabitant of this earth, I felt that it was my duty to advocate for its protection. I therefore decided to study Environmental Engineering. By generating ways for humans to creatively coexist with our environment I will be helping to create a more sustainable world as a whole. Similarly, this idea of making decisions based on the needs of my community has been prevalent throughout my life. I have participated in many volunteer groups including National Honor Society along with lending my knowledge to those who require help through tutoring and in-class aid. I plan on continuing to take an active leadership role in my community through a profession in environmental engineering and strong sense of environmental stewardship.
I have always been enamored by business: The allure of working hard and reaping the rewards of it has stirred within me a passion of which I have never tired. This fervor has influenced me to apply to the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, where I believe I can be a valuable asset to the college while it in turn prepares me to face the challenges and opportunities that both the domestic and international economies present.
Finance is a field that had always fascinated me right from my undergraduate college days. What make me interested in this particular field of study are the art of finance and the complexity of investment market which would allow me to employ my personal skills, such as analytical and communication skills, along with my personal characteristics such as dedication and compassion for what I do. As one of the most important sector in the world, I believe it would provide me with a broad range of career options.

Public Administration, as a field, had always captivated me right from my undergraduate days. I believe my curiosity for this field comes from my family. Both my father and my uncle were politicians. During my early days, I used to go to my father’s office where I had a great chance to observe different kinds of people with various jobs and interests. This was the first time I learned how mutual interests bring people together. When I understood how public relations work naturally, it forced me strongly to study and comprehend the complex theory of politics. After finishing high school, I made up my mind to pursue a career in Political Science. For this reason, I was enrolled to Istanbul Bilgi University’s Political Science program. After having completed my Bachelor’s Degree, I decided to excel in this field by completing a Master’s degree.
Ever since I was young I have always been interested in businesses and how they operate, as well as being fascinated by other languages and cultural differences. My passion for the subject expanded when I chose business studies and french, as part of my A-level education. Although these subjects are somewhat demanding, I find them extremely interesting. I believe that a degree combining both these aspects is the correct choice for me. I am confident that a course in international business studies and modern languages satisfies both these interests. I will be looking forward to learning about the international business world and I am relishing the thought of learning to integrate with other European countries. The idea of learning to communicate with other people across the world is something that has always appealed greatly to me.
I see a big connection of this categorization of my personality to my personal future career goal of occupying an executive position in a globally set-up enterprise. Therefore, I am pursuing an MBA in order to build a solid foundation of theory where “a lot of practical success could be built on.” A master’s degree in Business Administration ranks the holder directly into the top category of management and brings many opportunities and advantages unseen before.
My love for business is not something I was born with. It took over a decade of experience and exploration to discover my passion. This discovery began ten years ago when I accepted a position at The Pitney Bowes Corporation. My job was to make unsolicited phone calls to prospective businesses in order to sell our base model postage meter. All that was required was reading a script, word for word, to potential buyers. Yet, after a week of working at Pitney Bowes, I still didn't know important details about the meter, like what it looked like, and how it actually operated. My manager acted a bit surprised when I asked to see the meter, but she agreed, and I took a walk to an adjacent building where I saw first hand what I was selling. It looked completely different from what I had expected, but by viewing and touching it first hand, my ability to convey to people what I was offering improved dramatically. Once I viewed the device, I felt more confident to adlib on the sales pitch. In a couple of weeks reading my hybrid pitch led to a higher rate of sales. People were more apt to buy from someone who sounded like a person and less like a robot. My sales steadily improved and in my third month I was the number one sales person out of over 200 employees. Management implemented some of my changes in the selling process and as a result, overall sales of the entry model postage meter increased significantly.
Money and fame do not motivate my goals. Engineering in all forms is a field of innovation and invention. Aspirations of any great engineer should be to introduce to the world a new idea, product, or service that will make people happier and the environment safer. Success in these challenges is a reward greater than any dollar amount or public recognition. Engineers bring societies to new levels of civilization through their advancements in technology and discovery. The challenge to provide people with ever-increasing standards while at the same time feeding the population with ideas of what could be attracts my imagination, intelligence, and curiosity far more than any other career option. The engineering field embraces these challenges.
This change makes me involve in more other activities and eventually leads me to a successful Engineer. Education brings me a healthy body and mind throughout my life. Finally a career that embraces a program of continuous lifelong learning will ensure that I have a successful career. Because every moment of time, everywhere, under all circumstances something is being added to our previous attainments. My Career will be filled with many proud accomplishments, earning respect from colleagues, friends and a career that is fun and exciting.
Looking back after nine years, I could not feel more assured that at that time, I made the right choice. My unusual combination of experiences sets me worlds apart from not only a normal engineer but also from a marine engineer at similar position. Working for a big shipping company, exclusively on international assignments in high tech, capital intensive and rising LNG industry is the kind of job I had envisioned at the time of finishing my graduation. I could not have come here without that choice I made back then.
My typical work day begins at 8:30 in the morning with a visit to either Credit Agricole Indosuez, a French bank with whom my company has a classified credit facility, or to Janata, a nationalized bank which is considering our proposal for debt financing of an Acrylic yarn project. Although I face the same challenge of raising money at both banks, my approach differs between the different banks. When dealing with Indosuez, I must be very objective with in-depth knowledge of the issues while with Janata, my frequent visits are what matters most. Although I did not study business, my keenness towards finance and my achievements within the business department of my company have assigned me these responsibilities.
