A Confederacy of Dunces – written by John Kennedy Toole – took place during the early 1960s in New Orleans. In A Confederacy of Dunces, Ignatius J. Reilly, the main character of the book, acquired two jobs after his mother had gotten into an accident. He worked at Levy Pants and as a hot dog vendor to make money to help his mother pay for the damages caused by her accident. Ignatius is the following: slothful, gluttonous, and patronizing. Ignatius is a slothful human being. After his mother found out that she owed a lot of money for the damages caused by her accident, she told Ignatius that he would need to get a job to help her pay. He thought it was inconceivable that his mother wanted him to get a job. Ignatius is too slothful to get a job because all he ever wants to do is stay in his room (48-49). The banner Ignatius and the factory workers used was Ignatius’s bed sheet. Because the bed sheet had yellow stains on it, none of the workers wanted to touch it; and when they did, they acted as if it were a leper’s shroud (137-138). The novel begins with Parker’s newsletter that offends Dunstan and triggers him to write about his life to the headmaster. Davies uses Carl Jung’s archetypes to develop his novel Fifth Business, which explores the archetypal figures, archetypal hero’s journey, and fifth business. Robertson Davies is a wise old man, great mother, and wise old woman who plays a significant role in Dunstan’s life. Firstly, the author portrays Padre Ignacio Blazon as the wise old man for Dunstan Ramsay because he is on the quest to prove Mary Dempster is a saint.

Characters: The main character in The Sign of the Beaver is Matt. Matt’s character traits are responsibility, brave, sense of humor, respectful, smart, and curious. Attean is another main character and his character traits are responsibly, brave, serious, bold, mysterious, smart, resourceful, and light on his feet. Saknis is another character; his character traits are kindness, trustworthiness, fair, respectful, and brave. Next is Attean’s grandmother. His grandmother was stubborn, strict, hateful and prejudice, she hated white people. The final character is Matt’s father his character traits are to be loving, caring, honest, and faithful.
People one can never really tell how person is feeling or what their situation is behind closed doors or behind the façade of the life they lead. Two masterly crafted literary works present readers with characters that have two similar but very different stories that end in the same result. In Herman Melville’s story “Bartleby the Scrivener” readers are presented with Bartleby, an interesting and minimally deep character. In comparison to Gail Godwin’s work, “A Sorrowful Woman” we are presented with a nameless woman with a similar physiological state as Bartleby whom expresses her feelings of dissatisfaction of her life. Trickster figures are found throughout literature, religion, mythology, folklore, film, television, and history. They appear in many cultures and in different forms. There seems to be a sort of fascination with these trickster archetypes, who are usually clever, manipulative, selfish, treacherous, untrustworthy, thievish, deceitful and the list goes on. Personally, not having a favorite picture book growing up it was fun to recall childhood memories while skimming the bookshelf. A Fly Went By written by Mike Mc Clintock is one that has always been fun to reading and looking over after so many years it is evident why a child would be intrigued. It all started with a small fly passing by very quickly and a small boy asking why he was in such a hurry the fly replied “I must get out of here” the frog is after me and when he asked the frog why he was after the fly he replied “I want no fly” the cat is after me and characters continue to be chased by something larger (“A Fly Went By”). Lord of the Flies is a novel written by William Golding in 1954 about a group of young British boys who have been stranded alone together on an island with no adults. During the novel the diverse group of boys struggle to create structure within a society that they constructed by themselves. Golding uses many unique literary devices including characterization, imagery, symbolism and many more. The three main characters, Ralph, Piggy, and Jack are each representative of the three main literary devices, ethos, logos, and pathos. Beyond the characterization the novel stands out because of Golding’s dramatic use of objective symbolism, throughout the novel he uses symbols like the conch, fire, and Piggy’s glasses to represent how power has evolved and to show how civilized or uncivilized the boys are acting. It is almost inarguable that the entire novel is one big allegory in itself, the way that Golding portrays the development of savagery among the boys is a clear representation of how society was changing during the time the novel was published. Late one night, you’re having trouble falling asleep. It’s been storming all night, and the lightning has made it nearly impossible to lay your head down. The room is pitch black, save for the streak of moonlight streaming in through the curtains. All of a sudden, you hear something scratching at the window. You shrug it off, as it must just be a branch from the tree right outside. The sound of something shuffle around in your closet begins to echo in the room. You realize you’re standing straight up. Were you really that afraid? You lay back down, and realize you’re being an idiot. You close your eyes, annoyed at how little sleep you were going to get.
