INTRODUCTION The field I chose to go into is psychology. Psychology is the study of people’s behaviour and minds. It was developed to understand how we think and feel; how we learn and change; and why we act the way we do. Most individuals develop difficulties which they cannot solve, so psychologists use general principles and research to help these individuals with their difficulties. The aim is to modify behaviour. KEY SKILLS REQUIRED FOR THIS FIELD Interpersonal skills – a psychologist needs to have a passion to help others , to be able to listen attentively and give guidance. (Alyson, 2016) CHARACTERISTICS OF EMPLOYEES IN THIS FIELD An Effective Listener - being a psychologist means being able to listen at all times to what the client is saying and showing the client that he/she is listening. At the same time the psychologist needs to be thinking of what the root of the problem is , it also requires asking probing questions to clarify. Self-Awareness – as a psychologist you need to be aware of your own issues before you can help anyone else. Psychologists should also suggest ways to assist the client to recovery and not based on personal bias. Approachable – when having a client , the psychologist must always be someone that the client feels comfortable talking to. A psychologist should not appear to be superior to his client as well as he/she must be open minded and non-judgemental. Educated - to be a successful psychologists , one must understand humans , human nature and how the brain operates. Some of the most highly valuable traits and aspirations are becoming counterproductive. In the same vein, we are learning that our so-called negative emotions are exactly what we want to experience and express to get the best possible outcome in that situation. This research on the downside of positives and the upside of negatives is allowing us to understand how to appreciate the full spectrum of our personality and best navigate the complex, uncertain world that we confront each day. Objects – We are now trying to understand both the biology of what gives objects their value and the calculations the brain makes to create that value. It is important because it helps create better ways to help change peoples behaviour by changing what they value in the world.
