The essential goal of education is to give children the knowledge and means to entire the workforce and achieve success (Carmichael, 2009). It is important as teachers that we welcome the diverse needs of all students. While it is fundamental that teachers are well-informed on the content they are teaching and are responsible to guide student learning, there is much more to emerging student learning. To develop students’ education, schools should provide a structure of classroom communities conductive to learning. School environments must be respectful, caring, stable, and stimulating atmospheres in order to enhance the learning environment. Students that perceive the atmosphere as friendly, satisfying, focused on goals, and challenging and who feel the classroom has the required materials tend to learn more (Walberg, 1984). Teachers need to commit to students and their learning and become members of the learning community.
Teaching students to develop respect for others, their environment, and themselves helps to develop a caring, safe classroom community. In my classroom I would allow students to develop their own set of classroom rules and consequences with my guidance. This allows the students to define the meaning of respect and how it applies to our classroom and provides a judicious approach to discipline. Learning to respect one another develops a mutual trust among the classroom community. Learning respect also occurs through an open sharing of ideas. Students become members of the classroom community by using discussion strategies and positive support of others ideas. Generally an incorporation of the practices of teaching respect and caring, and providing a stable and stimulating classroom environment in the school will promote students’ learning. An effective teacher employs these practices jointly, is well-informed of the curriculum content, and is committed to their students learning. The role of teachers is a very fundamental and powerful position because we have a lasting impact on our students. Therefore, it is most imperative to always make judgments grounded upon what is best for my students.
The students must trust that the teacher has their best interest at heart. This trust will help build a positive relationship between student and teacher. This is important for giving the students a sense of purpose, as they will then be more motivated to succeed. This allows them to be more active in class activities and engage in discussion. Not only is trust important between teacher and student, but also between students. A student should not fear ridicule when providing their opinion or an answer. This is a teacher’s responsibility to establish a sense of community by allowing students to get to know each other and develop positive relationships throughout the entire classroom. We can all agree, educators and future educators alike, that teaching students is so much more than just presenting information to them. There is more to learning than only speaking. We’ve all had those teachers who were brilliant in their subject area, but not brilliant in making the students know the information. These are not true teachers; they are only smart. They teach in one way only, and doesn’t believe in individualized instruction, even though we all know that “low-income students and students of color tend to feel less “connected” to their schools than affluent and Anglo students, and that older students feel less connected than younger ones” (Schaps). As a future educator, sometimes I fear that I will become like one of these teachers, and I want to make sure that each of my students enjoy coming in class to learn, and is able to apply what they’ve learned to their unique lives. So for this inquiry project, I’ve decided to focus on classroom community. I believe that every great teacher establishes this concept in his/her classroom; without this concept, learning cannot happen. In this paper, I will define classroom community, discuss different ways to implement it in every classroom, and show the results of making an effort to keep it in your classroom.
As an educator, my goal is to prepare students for the “real world” to the best of my abilities. Many times, teachers are the only guiding light in students’ lives and are often their greatest influence. School is more than just a place for learning. The experiences students have in school usually lay the groundwork for the future of their lives. School is also a place for social interaction. The everyday interaction with other students prepares them to handle themselves properly once their schooling is finished. If a person breaks the rules, he or she is punished for it, the same way they would if they broke a law in society.
After spending some time reading about effective teaching, I found that one of the key aspects that seemed to come up most was communication. I believe that as a teacher you will need to have a range of communication, interpersonal and group skills. Communication is not just about being able to speak with your students , but also include writing, reading, listening with your eyes and ears, and also body language.( Ornstein, Lasley ,2004) For effective communication a teacher must interact and communicate respect , there should always be respect for the students, Parents, Colleague’s and their network of educational professionals . I feel that listening deeply and giving credit for the student’s contributions will encourage respect from the students, a great example of this can be seen in the (Online course: Becoming a Teacher,2005). When creating a supportive learning environment it is important to consider some of the underlying barriers that can prevent the inclusion and the prospective learning of our students in the classroom. As teachers we need to take into account what kind of classroom climate we are creating for not only our students but their respective parents as well. It is vital as teachers that we understand how threatening and overwhelming the complexities of the classroom environment can be, especially to a parent. I personally believe that it is imperative that teachers should instil a welcoming, supportive and accepting environment in which everyone that enters the classroom feels appreciated.

The idea of respect starts with teachers and often branches to the development of peer and self respect. Everyone has experienced a teacher that they couldn't stand and dreaded going to that class. The role and responsibilities of a teacher is very complex. Teachers are responsible for making sure their learners acquire the knowledge they need, but also achieve their qualification by the end of the course in a safe learning environment, so they have the skills and experience they need to start their careers. To achieve that goal a teacher must be creative, professional, flexible and knowledgeable enough to deal with daily challenges and find different ways to help their learners needs.
