The opening scene of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet will be the scene that I choose to analysis. Elements of plots that could be found in the first scene are exposition, point of attack, discovery and foreshadowing. Each one of these elements will be used to help analysis the scene and make it clear as to what is going on in the mind of Shakespeare.
The first element of plot found in the first scene is exposition. We read that there are two groups The Montague’s and The Capulets, and they seem to not like each other. We never see why they are aways against each other. We don’t find out what caused the tension between the groups.
The second element of plot found in the first scene is point of attack. We find the point of attack when The Montague’s and The Capulets start to fight with each other. When says Abraham “Do you bite your thumb at us, sir?” (1.1.43) After that line they fight and it sets of the concept of how much each group hates each other through out the rest of the play.
The third element of plot found in the first scene is discovery. After the fight scene ends Romeo is with Benvolio. We discovery that Romeo is in love with someone but is sad because Benvolio tells him that there are many other girls around that he could find that are more beautiful. He does not like Benvolio idea and wants to see Rosaline.
Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo and Juliet take the play to a whole new level. Baz modernizes the play and sets it in real time to show what it would have been like back then compared to now. Baz Luhrmann stated that the “philosophy in adapting Romeo and Juliet for the screen was to reveal Shakespeare’s lyrical, romantic, sweet, sexy, musical, violent, rude, rough, rowdy, rambunctious storytelling through his richly invented language”
His concept is that he wants audiences to be able to understand the movie even though they might not be able to understand the text. He has set the play in modern era so that people will be able to relate the action in the movie to real events that they have seem in their own life.
In this movie Baz makes everything modern. He changes era make the place of the film in Mexico. In Mexico gangs are big there so he turns the two houses into gangs.

In the prologue of the play, it is said, “From ancient grudge break to new mutiny” (I i 3) which means that the the two families, the Capulets and the Montagues, have been in a feud for an extremely long time, and the feud has recently caused fights and deaths. This is important because Romeo, a Montague, and Juliet, a Capulet, fall in love that is destined to end tragically. Their love contends with the hatred that their families share towards one another. It's telling us that yes the Montagues and Capulets hate each other and yes Romeo is an imbecile for getting over one Capulet with another, but it also tells us what roles the different characters are going to be playing in the story. For example, the Capulet's nurse can be interpreted as a mother figure or someone that takes care of people and nurtures them. This can be seen when she tells Juliet “Peace, I have done. God mark thee to his grace! Thou wast the prettiest babe that e'er I nursed. An I might live to see thee married once, I have my wish.” this is just one example of the nurse showing how much she cares for Juliet. Looking back on my point, Act 1 is like an introductory paragraph because it sets up the overall theme of the play or as it is known in writing, the thesis statement. The theme in my opinion is that actions have consequences. Image if Romeo would have never gotten over Rosaline, the women he loved. He probably would have never met Juliet and would have continued groaning on about love saying “Love is a smoke made with the fume of sighs;” and for the time being, believing that love is a waste of time. The basis for the hate is introduced to the audience very early on in all three plays. The Capulets and the Montagues were neighboring feuding families. Shakespeare never states the reason for the dispute between the two but he does clearly show the hatred from the beginning. "Two households, both alike in dignity, In fair Verona, where we lay our scene, From ancient grudge break to new mutiny, Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean" (I i 1-4). These first few lines of the play clearly describe the hatred between the two families and at the same time foreshadow an unpleasant end. In "The Merchant of Venice", Shylock more boldly states, "I hate him for he is a Christian" (I iii 39). This cry of hate is also early on in the play, which clearly helps show the reader that he is the antagonist of the play. In "Henry IV" it is revealed in the first scene that a young Hotspur has kept prisoners of war away from the King. He calls the King Bolingbroke behind his back out of disrespect. "All studies here I solemnly defy, save how to gall and pinch this Bolingbroke. And that same sword and buckler Prince of Wales (I iii 227-229). In Shakespearean plays, a character who hates or plots against the King is automatically the villain of the play. The first act in all three plays revealed the characters for the audience to root against throughout the play.
In Act 1 scene 1 we see servants of the Capulet house. and Montague house quarrel in this instance the feud is introduced as well as demonstrated in the above. Shakespeare tries to help the audience to understand the complicity of the feud as it later causes numerous death. The snare of the snare. Later on in the scene Benvolio comes in and tries to keep the peace as he says “part fools”.
Firstly, the Capulets and Montagues are at odds with each other. Members of each house and servants break into a sword fight, clashing with each other. Sampson says "Draw, if you be men. Gregory, remember thy swashing blow." (Act 1, Scene 1, Line 60). The feuding between the two families motivates Sampson to challenge the Capulets. Another example of how the two houses despise each other is what Romeo and his friends have to do to get into the Capulet feast. So they will not be recognized, Romeo, Mercutio, and Benvolio wear comic masks to hide their faces. Mercutio says, "Give me a case to put my visage in" (Act 1, Scene 4, Line 29). They do not want to be recognized because of the hatred between the two houses. Also, Romeo and Juliet are not supposed to be in love: "My only love sprung from my only hate! / Too early seen unknown, and known too late! / Prodigious birth of love it is to me, / That I must love a loathed enemy." says Juliet (Act 1, Scene 5, Lines 137-140). They are not supposed to love each other because it just so happens that each of their houses despise each other. It is unfortunate for Romeo and Juliet that their two families are against each other, because this means that they are not supposed to be married.
Shakespeare starts the play with conflict, and consequences for this conflict. When Gregory and Sampson, Capulet servants, begin to annoy members
In the beginning of the play we are introduced to two characters, Sampson and Gregory. Itching for a fight, they believe they have as much responsibility to defend the name Capulet as their masters do. "The quarrel is between our masters and us their men." They encounter some Montagues and decide to taunt them. They have intentions of just having a little fun and maybe a chance to play with their swords. Almost like a child anticipating the amusement he will have with his new Christmas toys. Instead, they provoke the Capulets enough that the squabble turns into a grand battlefield, the axis power against the allies. You can tell that they are surprised when Benvolio comes to break them up. When he does the reader is given a sense of the "bewilderment" felt in the atmosphere. When Tybalt enters though, he disgraces the name Montague and challenges Benvolio. This in turn ignites another one of the many disputes between the families. The two primary men should have figured what was going to happen. After all, they are feuding families, what else would you do? In the end, the final verdict on their harassment to the public peace plays a strong role in the play to come. The prince sentenced death to anyone who dare disturb ...
Romeo and Juliet is a famous play that was first performed between 1594 and 1595, it was first printed in 1597. Romeo and Juliet is not entirely fictional as it is based on two lovers who lived in Verona. The Montague’s and Capulet’s are also real. Romeo and Juliet is one of the ten tragedies that William Shakespeare wrote. In this essay, I aim to investigate what act 1, scene1 makes you expect about the rest of the play.
Scene 1 Act 1:Scene one opens with a fight on the streets of Verona between servants from the Montague and Capulet households. While attempting to stop the fight, Benvolio is drawn in by Tybalt. The heads of both houses (Montague and Capulet) arrive on the scene. Prince Escalus arrives and stops the fight, forbidding any further brawls.
Thirdly, Brian Johnson honors Baz Luhrmann 's version of Romeo and Juliet as "just the kind of movie Shakespeare might make if he is around today." In Maclean 's interview with Baz Luhrmann on his directorial accomplishment in William Shakespeare 's Romeo and Juliet, he states: "What people forget, "begin Luhrmann, "is that Shakespeare is a relentless entertainer. When he plays the Elizabethan stage, he is basically dealing with an audience of 3,000 drunk punters who were selling pigs and geese in the stalls. He plays with everyone. . . . And his style is to have stand-up comedy one moment, a song and then the highest tragedy right next to it. The first scene is a television which automatically brings the modern feel to the film. As the camera gives the sense of the television moving slowly towards us we suddenly break into a quick speedy montage showing the story and some of the characters. The introduction to the play is repeated, once on the television by the news reader and again during the opening montage. This may be to create effect or perhaps to show the importance and publicity this story had. The scene in the petrol station focuses on the rivalry and hatred of the two families, The Capulets and the Montagues.
The play starts with a street brawl between Montagues and Capulets. The Prince of Verona intervenes and declares that further breach of the peace will be punishable by death. Later, Count Paris talks to Lord Capulet about marrying his daughter, but Capulet is wary of the request because Juliet is still only thirteen. Capulet asks Paris to wait another two years and invites him to attend a planned Capulet ball. Lady Capulet and Juliet's nurse try to persuade
