Teaching Diversity to the New Generation Why is diversity important? Differences make us who we are some might say, but how many actually believe that? According to pbs.com, “Phyllis A. Katz, while a professor at the University of Colorado, found babies as young as six-months of age stared significantly longer at photographs of adults who were of a different color than their parents.” It is clear that we notice differences but do we actually take the opportunity to teach each other about diversity, even as infants? Culture immersion has become a reoccurring topic in many schools today. With transfer students attending schools in different countries, and teaching language classes in lower grades; we are implementing diversity increasingly in the educational system. Diversity is not something to censor anymore. We no longer live in a world where peoples outward appearance, and hidden differences are not cloaked and can be in a conversation without fear of being judged or offending people. Not just children, but adults need to learn that asking questions about differences is definitely not a bad thing, in fact setting those questions aside and making them appear as if they are bad is much more offensive than simply asking questions about diversity. What Is Cultural Immersion? According to thestudyabroadblog.com, “There is an intangible value which comes from adapting in a new place, participating into a community, interacting with local people, and understanding the way others live.” I believe we do not need to study abroad to implement this into our lives. We should embrace programs like this for everyone, especially children, locally through culture immersion centers that embrace all different kinds of
