Slave trading was very traumatic for the slaves, being separated from the only thing they knew. Some lived on plantations under a watchful eye, and others worked right beside their owners. Slaves on large plantations usually worked in gangs, and there were better positions to work than others. Some gangs were separated into groups of lighter workers, consisting of men and women. Other gangs weren't so lucky and were assigned to hard labor.

When they received the slaves they found out some of them were baptized, and were under the Christian religion. So they could not be treat as slaves under the religion so they were turned into indentured servants. There were very few vague laws on slavery, but it was always a permanent servitude. At first slaves had limited right, and were aloud to own land, after their period of slavery was over. They were allowed to marry and have children. The slaves kids that were born while they were enslaved were not consider to be slaves, but to be free under the law.

Throughout the time frame of late 1800s-early 1900s, children worked long hours in dangerous factory conditions for very little wages. They were considered useful as laborers because their small stature allowed them to be cramped into smaller spaces, and they could be paid less for their services. Many worked to help support their families, and by doing so, they forwent their education. Numerous nineteenth century reformers and labor groups sought to restrict child labor and to improve working conditions.

According to the article “A History of Child Labor” reviewed by Milton Fried, a child could work as long as six days a week for up to 18 hours a day, and only make a dollar a week. Child labor was nothing but cheap labor. The big companies loved cheap labor because then they could make an item for not very much money, and make a huge profit margin. Fried continues to state how cheap the labor was, “One glass factory in Massachusetts was fenced with barbed wire ‘to keep the young imps inside.’ These were boys under 12 who carried loads of hot glass all night for a wage of 40 cents to $1.10 per night.” Unlike, children today who are in bed sleeping by 8 pm each night, these children had to stay up all night working to make just enough income for their families. Which meant that they didn't need to dress exactly like them and take up their habits and responsibilities. They did not have that many activities for work had filled most of their time. Urban and middle class families did have to send there child to work but can mostly prosper by not having to send their children to work. But still the child was a necessary and valuable economic asset for most families. This was do to the fact that still a vast majority of American families lived on farms and they must depend on the work of all family members. By the age of six or seven these farm children had specific responsibilities to help on the farm. The boys by the age of ten or twelve would have to take on men's tasks. The responsibilities of slave children were like the responsibilities of white children that lived on the farm. Except by the age of ten or twelve the slave children both boys and girls were sent to work in the field from sunup to sundown.
It is important to know what slavery actually means. It is the situation in which a person finds himself when having to work against his will for the profit of another individual and is not able to escape this situation. A person is a slave when he lives and works under the control of another person or persons and cannot determine the course of his life or have any benefit from the work that he does. Children are the easiest people to exploit as they are usually weak and vulnerable, particularly in the developing world and highly overpopulated countries such as those in South East Asia or Africa. They easily fall prey to being used as child labour as slave traders or the owners of slaves are easily able to identify their vulnerability. Many of these children are captured and kept by force but many are also ‘sold’ by their families who believe that they are the answer to be able to provide for their impoverished relatives with income for their survival. Children used in child labour are exploited for little or no pay. Children used as slaves are common in India, Pakistan, Nepal and other nations in Southern Asia but the practice is found throughout the entire world.
