Generally, a person’s entire preconceptions of Indigenous peoples are based upon how they have been represented to them throughout their life. Representation involves a degree of individual explanation that leads to distinctions in meanings of a particular topic. Our own perceptions and understandings are influenced by the media’s representation of particular issues. Representations are imperative as they sometimes have the ability to call our very identities into question. We struggle over them because they matter – and these are contests from which serious consequences can flow. They define what is ‘normal’, who belongs – and therefore, who is excluded (Hall, 1997, p.10).

The following song “What Makes the Red Man Red”, is from an extremely popular Disney movie; one I am sure most of you will have either seen or heard of, Peter Pan. Peter Pan is a 1953 American animated fantasy adventure film produced by Walt Disney. In a land of childish savages and rejected civilization, the portrayal of the Indigenous Native Americans is the most degenerate.
The Indigenous American Indian culture in this film has been represented as one of feathers, loincloths, teepees, wigwams and tomahawks. This portrayal of their culture is largely negative. Firstly, the main message of the song is that Indians are red, this is supported by the fact that the colour of their skin in the film is a dark red colour. I am not sure where this notion came from but it is certainly an inaccurate representation of Native Indians skin tone. As well as this, the “red men” jump around making loud noises and speak gibberish, using phrases such as
Thomas King uses an oral story-telling style of writing mingled with western narrative in his article “You’re Not the Indian I Had in Mind” to explain that Indians are not on the brink of extinction. Through this article in the Racism, Colonialism, and Indigeneity in Canada textbook, King also brings some focus to the topic of what it means to be “Indian” through the eyes of an actual Aboriginal versus how Aboriginals are viewed by other races of people. With his unique style of writing, King is able to bring the reader into the situations he describes because he writes about it like a story he is telling.

In the story “The Ransom of Red Chief” the author, O’ Henry, used Red Chief to stereotype the Idiana’s. Red Chief stereotyped the Indian’s by calling the Indian’s pesky savages. Also, Red Chief played a game called The Black Scout, and Red Chief said Bill had to get on his hands and knees and let Red Chief ride him to warn the settlers that the Indiana’s are coming. Red Chief is basically saying that the Indian’s are really terrible people to be around. The author used Red Chief to stereotype the Indians.
In this proposal our team seeks to explore the injustices within the Indian Act. To achieve this our proposed research will examine the target population being the aboriginal woman. The paper will further explore the oppressions faced by the aboriginal women within the Indian Act. Generations of native people in Canada have faced suffering and cultural loss as a result of European colonization of their land. Government legislation has impacted the lives of five generations of First Nations people and as a result the fifth generation (from 1980 to present) is working to recover from their crippled cultural identity (Deiter-McArthur 379-380). This current generation is living with the fallout of previous government policies and societal prejudices that linger from four generations previous. Unrepentant, Canada’s ‘Genocide’, and Saskatchewan’s Indian People – Five Generations highlight issues that negatively influence First Nations people. The fifth generation of native people struggle against tremendous adversity in regard to assimilation, integration, separation, and recovering their cultural identity with inadequate assistance from our great nation.
As a result, both films represent Natives Americans under the point of view of non-Native directors. Despite the fact that they made use of the fabricated stereotypes in their illustrations of the indigenous people, their portrayal was revolutionary in its own times. Each of the films add in their own way a new approach to the representation of indigenous people, their stories unfold partly unlike. These differences make one look at the indigenous not only as one dimensional beings but as multifaceted beings, as Dunbar say, “they are just like us.” This is finally a sense of fairness and respect by the non-native populations to the Native Indians.
It appears the caricature of Native Americans remains the same as first seen from the first settler’s eyes: savage-like people. Their culture and identity has become marginalized by popular culture. Despite the decreasing inequalities between men and women in both private and public spheres, aboriginal women continue to be oppressed and discriminated against in both. Aboriginal people in Canada are the indigenous group of people that were residing in Canada prior to the European colonization. The term First Nations, Indian and indigenous are used interchangeably when referring to aboriginal people. Prior to the colonization, aboriginal communities used to be matrilineal and the power between men and women were equally balanced. When the European came in contact with the aboriginal, there came a shift in gender role and power control leading towards discrimination against the women. As a consequence of the colonization, the aboriginal women are a dominant group that are constantly subordinated and ignored by the government system of Canada. Thus today, aboriginal women experiences double jeopardy as they belong to more than one disadvantaged group i.e. being women and belonging to aboriginal group. In contemporary world, there are not much of a difference between Aboriginal people and the other minority groups as they face the similar challenges such as gender discrimination, victimization, and experiences injustice towards them. Firstly, the poem, “I’m not the Indian you had in mind,” is oozing with stereotypes and irony. Talking about how people assume “Indians” are the figure found in history books wearing hides and a headdress is a common stereotype and misconception. The quote, “With wolf and eagle by his side,” as well as “the boys who sing around the drum” make the truth in the statement genuinely visible. Thomas also speaks that “He may well have a secret song, a dance he’ll share, a long lost chant,” supporting the stereotypes that Indians are perceived to be like.
According to Shah, indigenous people are those who have historical belonging to a particular region or country before its colonization or transformation into a nation state. Indigenous people may have different cultural, linguistic, traditional and other characteristics to those of the dominant culture of that region or state. There are approximately 40,000,000 people in Latin America that belong to almost 600 different indigenous groups. According to World Bank figures, 12.76% of the entire American population and approximately 40% of the rural population is indigenous.
