Before taking English 1A, I was a discouraged writer because as an English learner, I did not believe that I had any ability to be an acceptable writer. Therefore, I did not have any joy while I was doing writing assignments. However, I have gradually loved writing through this semester. I fortunately got plenty of helps from my classmates and professor; thus, my writing skills have gotten improved a lot. I currently can feel that writing is a quite enjoyable process, and I like delivering my ideas to other people by writing, too. I am really proud that I have enhanced my pre-writing skills, writing structure and revising skills and have learned how to write an effective thesis statement and how to deal with rhetorical analysis. However, I still have lots of deficiencies in my articles, such as grammar problem and the lack of logical transition. In the past, I used to start writing an essay without writing an outline. I even did not brainstorm before I began to write. As a result, my essays were undoubtedly messy and disorganized. For instance, after I finished writing my Paper 2, I asked my professor for suggestions. He advised me to rearrange the order of paragraphs since my essay was disorganized and disordered. At that moment, I finally realized that if I did not plan out what I was going to write, my essay would be less likely to be logical because outline is like a base and foundation of an article. Hence, I started writing an outline from then on. For example, I nowadays would like to write my thesis statement down first. After that, I will briefly write down what I will talk about in body paragraphs. After using pre-writing skills and techniques, I notice that my essays are much more organized; and thus, my essays are no... ... middle of paper ... ... essay looks so discontinuous. I realize that to make my article better, the transition between paragraphs are really important because it can give readers a sense of what I am talking about. Through this semester, I believe that this is the best class I ever take, but on the other hand, this is the worst class I ever take. The reason why I believe this is the best class for me is because I have improved my writing skills a lot through English 1A. For example, I have improved my pre-writing skills so I can write much more easily when I really start writing. Furthermore, professor and students in this class are really nice, so I have gotten a lot of helps from them; their helps motivate me to keep enhancing and improving myself. However, this is the worst class for me because English 1A is the most challenging class for me since I still have many writing weakness.
As I look back into my high school years, I thought I wrote papers well. But then coming into a college environment, my papers were mediocre. By overlooking at my past papers, I found that they were unorganized, sloppy and had bad use of diction. From now on, I will use the tools I learned in English 1100-40 as a foundation for the future papers I intend on writing in college. Following the criteria of organizing ideas so that they flow, impacting the reader with diction and also by being creative, will help become an ideal writer. Following the criteria of staying motivated in short and long term goals, taking responsibility for actions and finally the ability to study well will help me develop into a supreme student.
Use transitions and make connections not only between paragraphs, but among sentences, too. Play with different types of sentence structures (some long, some short, etc.) and more vivid, descriptive word choice to make the essay engaging to the reader.
In the past three months I feel like I have accomplished a great deal. As the semester comes to an end I find myself reflecting not only how I have survived the first semester but also what I have learned. The most important thing I have learned so far is how to become a better writer. I did not think it could really happen to me. I did not think I could handle all the work. I did not think I could actually become a better writer. Some how after all the hours of writing, and putting effort into the papers that I wrote this semester, I became a better writer. I did this because I concentrated on two very important areas, with the attitude of, if I could just become better in those then I would become a better writer. With help from an awesome teacher and a reliable tutor I have become a better writer by improving my skills in the areas of procrastination and content.
When I wrote many of my papers, I tried to be as organized as possible. Writing research papers always seems to give me problems. My greatest weakness is going to the library and finding the right information to write a paper. When I write a paper, I always construct an outline or thesis. It is easier for me to think about ideas and then write about them. Starting on a paper from scratch without an outline or thesis gives me problems because then I mumble on about the same information. I have learned to read the information over and over again to be sure it is correct and in order. I do not wan to get at shocking gra...
When I am assigned to write an essay, the first thing I do is panic. I panic because I always seem to run into the same problems with my writing process. I have no central idea. I have no clue what I actually want to write about. When I was younger, I always started by making a web or an outline because thats what my teachers encouraged me to do in school, but I don’t do that anymore. Now I sit in front of my laptop, I take a deep breath, close my eyes, gather my thoughts, and type. I just let my thoughts flow onto the page. When I don’t feel the pressure of writing to an audience, my writing is completely different than it is when I am writing something that I know my professor or peers will read. As I am writing this exact sentence, I don’t quite know where I am going with it. My writing process is unorthodox and unorganized, but it is what I do everytime. When I stop trying to follow the linear model of writing, explained by Nancy Sommers as the process of forming an idea, writing about it, then revising afterwards, I feel that I am more capable of discovering something meaningful within my words. When I am forced to write a thesis statement and base my paper solely on it, it doesn’t come out as good as I think it should. It decreases the potential for my ideas to grow and discoveries to be made. It limits me to a single statement and narrows my thoughts, preventing me from discovery.
If you were to ask me to write an essay before August, I would have picked up a pencil right away and just started writing, not understanding how significant an effect that having an outline can have on my writing. My first graded assignment was to write an essay on altering public space, which seems like a simple task at first. However, I turned this simple task into an essay style scrabble tournament, throwing words in wherever I could fit them. There was no organization whatsoever in my essay. I had what I thought were good points and descriptions, but nothing really made sense and there was not much flow to the paper. Subsequently, I made a sixty-nine on my ...
As a result I believe that the progress I have made in my writing during the course of English 1B has changed my negative views of writing. As silly as it may sound to say that my fears about writing papers have been defeated, they have. Whether they are short reviews or extensive research papers, I have become more comfortable in writing. I have not only learned how to write and express myself more effectively, by organizing my critical thoughts, but most importantly I have learned that review and revision is an essential part of the writing process. This process how allowed me to grow to become a better writer. The skills I have acquired can be used for future coursework and beyond.
When it came to the process of writing my first, second, and third essay’s, there was clear visual improvement that I have become a better writer in certain aspects. As for essay one, I tended to rely on my writing skills as a high school student rather than use the components of a successful college student essay. This was definite once I received the feedback given by ...
When my essays are read aloud I am able to find my mistakes. I also created a pre-writing system in which I take the topic and break down the essay into sections in which I focus on specific topics instead of just going with the flow. I have noticed when I go with the flow my essay tends to be sloppy and jump around. I found that my techniques helped me write my research essay. It made my research essay seem like a piece of cake because it was separated. Each paragraph was given it’s individual time and notes to make them all
Reflecting back to this semester did I realize that Professor Ray had taught many skills to my learning on material that I have not had a chance to cover or got to in high school. She had shown many different type of technique of writing for students and taught the class writing can be enjoyable. Throughout my semester in ENG-111, my writing skills for all my papers have weaknesses like Grammar/Spelling/Punctuation for fragments, comma splices, and comma use. I also, have trouble with starting topic sentences and sentence structure of the body paragraph. However, I have made strong improvement in certain areas like development for supporting paragraph details and the thesis statement.
In summary, I had an enjoyable time in my first college English class. I pushed myself as diligently as I could and learned much more than I thought I would. In addition to, my strengths grew stronger and my weaknesses improved as well. I acknowledge I still have some techniques and skills to work on; however, I am willing to put the time in and cannot wait to take English in the future. Writing is an everlasting skill that will be an enormous asset to me; in addition to my future classes, and my career as
I actually love to write because, it's really expressing how I feel about a certain topic. Some areas of my writing I believe still need improvement would be my vocabulary and punctuation. I want to be able to use higher vocabulary in my writing like college vocabulary. Also, wanting to know where I have to put commas and capitalization. Some goals I plan to attain for second semester is increase in vocabulary, and writing in a more academic or formal tone. The steps I have to take in order to achieve these goals would be to search up better usage in words also look over others essays and comprehend off of those. If I'm able to improve these goals, I believe my writing skills will be completed. Therefore, I hope I'm able to achieve these goals and become a greater writer than I am
My first year of college education I choose to take English Comp 1 because I felt it would help me improve my writing skills for other classes that I may take at the college level. This class was one of my hardest classes but you have to put time and effort in for your grades. Most of my paper grades are at a B range which isn 't bad but I 'm still learning how to develop my writing. I 've learned many important skills while taking this class to better my writing and how to make it more effective. The class time we had was always helpful because we were always involved with the other students and the information for class was always announced clearly. This class has really shaped me into a better writer than
Over the course of the semester, I feel that I have grown as a writer in many ways. When I came into the class, there were skills I had that I already excelled at. During my time in class, I have come to improve on those skills even more. Before I took this class, I didn’t even realise what I was good at. This is the first class where I felt I received feedback on my writing that helped me to actually review my work to see what areas I lacked in and where I succeeded.
When I write a paper, I usually tend to write and edit at the same time. I could never continue writing without correcting my mistakes and making sure everything seems perfect. However, throughout this course, it made me realize that I should write everything on my mind, when writing a paper, just like I would in my notes. Later on, I should revise and edit my paper, making sure to cut back ideas and sentences that are off topic. Additionally, I’m the type of person that likes to write with no boundaries. Writing my research argument essay, made me realize that I could stick to a structure and yet bend the rules a little bit. When we started with this assignment, I was truly excited to research and write about a topic that I am passionate about. When we were asked to form an outline, I was bummed. I felt like I wasn’t able to form ideas or narrow down my topic, let alone write...
