Intro Good parenting is key for the development of young children for the way they act, make decisions, lifestyles and how they perceive others. So, when it comes down to choosing the right parenting style, it can be a bit challenging for many new and old parents. There are currently four popular parenting styles that consist of authoritarian, neglectful, permissive and authoritative. Although there are only four main parenting styles, parents can still be non-decisive and have a mixture of the parenting styles. Within this work I will be explaining the four different parenting styles and the effects they have on children. As well as explain how my parents raised me and the changes I will make when raising my children. Parenting Styles Parenting …show more content…
Parents then base standard rules off of the child’s feelings and assures that the child fully understands why they should follow the rules and what the consequences of breaking them will be. This parenting style creates a strong relationship between the parents and their child allowing the child to mature into an independent person that can make their own decisions. Authoritarian parenting on the other hand requires children to listen to rules without explanation. Parenting of this style requires the children to listen to rules without discussion, and most of the time the parents hardly connect emotionally to their child. The results, as Amy Morin who is a psychotherapist says, “Children who grow up with strict authoritarian parents tend to follow rules much of the time. But, they may develop self-esteem problems” (Morin). In other words, the results of this parenting style cause children to lack in confidence as well as not being sure of their own decision-making skills. Neglectful parenting on the other hand is when the parents are not involved in the child's life. The parents take care of the child's basic needs of survive like food and shelter, but they don't comfort the child or try being in their lives. This can …show more content…
My mother was more of a camera that would watch my every move and report it to my father if there was ever a problem. They had set rules which required me to act mature, but I was not fully aware of many rules they required me to follow. Although, whenever I would be punished for breaking a rule, either my father of mother would come in to comfort me and explain why I was being punished. This allowed me to continue to love my parents through the countless punishments I would receive. Until slowly they had no longer come in to comfort me after being punished. Because of this I had started to build a resentment towards life, and was an angry child. I felt as if the world was my problem because nobody understood my feelings. Being punished and not understanding why caused me to fall behind not only in grades but in my social skills as well. It seemed as if every other day my parents were receiving calls from the school about my bad behavior, which didn’t help since I would be punished once more while not aware of the phone calls they received. I felt as if no one had understood me within school as well as at home. I had an unhealthy amount of anger that lingered with me wherever I went. The parenting style they used was an authoritarian and authoritative parenting style. Both of my parents would waver between strict rules that
Parenting styles refer to a set of different manners in which parents raise their children. There are four parenting styles including authoritarian, authoritative, permissive, and uninvolved parenting. The authoritarian parenting style is based on the implementation of rules, and on the idea that all rules should be followed without exceptions. Similarly, authoritative parenting style implements rules, but the child feelings are taken in consideration and reasonable exceptions to the rule are allowed. On the other hand, in permissive parenting style, there is implementation of rules, but they are rarely encouraged to be followed. Lastly, in uninvolved parenting style, there is a lack of engagement between parents and children, and there are
No one teaches us how to be parents. As parents raise their children they hope to raise them to be good members of society. A child’s upbringing is reflected as they interact with other children and other people. When they come to act inappropriately or in a way society doesn’t see as normal, the person to blame is the parent. As a parent, today and always, they need to raise their child to meet the societal norms and at the same teach them to be good citizens. The parenting a person receives will be reflected when they form their own family. The belief is then formed to be to raise a better family than the one raised in. The different parenting styles and the factors have to be taken into consideration such as time, the environment, and the social and psychological aspects as well. The belief is to be a loving and tolerating parent but there is no perfect way to parent because each child has their own needs.
The authoritarian parenting style is the stricter style. Parents who use this method have strict limits set and show little or no love. The most common reason for parents using this method is that they don't want their children being failures. So, parents as such will shame and blames, punish, and tease their child. As sick as this sounds studies show parents using this method are usually successful. When a child is punished or blamed he or she is said to learn what not to do, feel guilty, and avoid from making such mistakes again. Punishments include spankings, timeouts, and taking something of value from the child. Parents who use this method demand respect, allow no questioning or arguing, and want full compliance. One can tell that a parent is like this because they themselves are demanding and have some type of anger issues. The authoritarian parenting style is common is Asian countries such as India, China, Thailand and many more Eastern countries. This method is very rarely seen used in the States or Canada. This style is sometimes used without the parent even knowing it. Usually when a parent is irritated or upset they will tend to be more strict a...
Authoritarian child rearing Diana Baumrind (1971) classified it as low in acceptance and involvement, high in coercive control, and low in autonomy granting (Berk 279). Authoritarian parents force their children to follow and obey the rules unconditionally if not will get punished. Parents will usually appear irritable and angry and will not express much warmth or nurturing (Cherry). There is little open communication between parent and the child. Their way to communicate with their children is usually by yelling and little or
These two styles; authoritarian, and permissive both have deleterious results that are often visible throughout different developmental stages, such as rebellious behavior. As well each style has its own advantages such as; acceptance by peers with commonality. Child rearing for most parents is an evolving set of skills. It could be said that, with any style of parenting, there is no explicit set of rules for every situation, and what works for one child may not be effective for another. Even though authoritarian and permissive parenting may have some minor similarities they are remarkably different from one another in their approach to raising children.
Baurminds four parenting styles mentioned in this paper tends to have unquestionable influences on a child’s behavior. There is not a single parenting style that is perfectly right for a child, parenting is the biggest task to tackle. Parenting is full of trials and mistakes and at times it needs to be developed at certain situations and changed in different circumstances. What works with one child might completely be different for another child. Talk about differences, even real siblings are completely different individuals with different habits and behaviors. All these factors together play an important role in parenting.
Authoritarian Parenting, Parents tend to be very strict with their children. They have a set of rules and demands that they expect their children to follow, with no questions asked. Children have no say, the parents pay the bills so while under their roof whatever they say goes. Authoritarian parents may punish their children if rules are broken by taking away thing they like such as games, playing outside, or television. Some may parent may punish children by yelling at them and spanking them.
Another type of parenting style is authoritarian parenting, which is demanding but not responsive. This is a more restrictive, heavy punishment parenting style that the parents, their children to follow their rules with no communication between them. They will not explain why the rules are set that way and the limits. It has been said that parents who use this parenting style are unresponsive to their child’s emotional needs and they tend to show a low social ability towards others since their parents prevent them from making choices of their
The first type of parenting style is called authoritarian. In this parenting style the parents are the boss. They make strict rules and they enforce them. They focus more on restrictions than a loving relationship with their child. They believe it is their job as parents to catch their children being bad and punish them. These parents use external control on their children instead of taking time to tell the kid what they did wrong and why they should not do it again. Something these parents do not realize is that they do not catch their kids being good. Authoritarian parents are firm and unsympathetic. Authoritarian parents love to use discipline.
Each different parenting style each comes with pros and cons. In regards to parenting, there is never a wrong or right answer because every child and circumstances are different when it comes to the importance of the positive and negative effects. But each style comes with its effects on children. A few pros about Authoritarian parents are that their...
“The most beautiful thing in this world is to see your parents smiling and knowing that you are the reason behind that smile.” Our parents’ first concern; which parenting style to follow in order to raise up a well-developed, and well-mannered person. Matter of fact, a huge debate went over this particular issue, whether strict parenting is the right method, or being leant is the correct method. "There is clear evidence that parents can and do influence children." (Maccoby 1). Although, there are numerous factors that can affect the parenting process, or affect the way the parents treat the child (Bossard 333) (Maccoby 1). For instance, different home circumstances... the divided home, or the neglectful home, or the mother-controlled home, or may be the overly demanding home, or the home with too many bosses, so all these different home atmospheres are major factors that affect the development of any child (Bossard 333). In addition, the parents’ attitude towards the child is mostly effective in the formation of the child's personality (Bossard 334). Furthermore, the genetic effect of the child is very important, researches proved that genes are one of the most effective factors in the parenting process, and genes affect the child's own behavior characteristics, and also influences the way the parents are tending to treat their son/daughter (Maccoby 5). I will explain the three major parenting styles and will prove that it is not possible to assume that there is one best style to follow, because each home or family have their own special cases or circumstances that will affect the parenting process
Authoritarian-parents who are punitive and focus on gaining a child's obedience to parental demands rather than responding to the demands of the child.Authoritarian parenting styles give little to no options to a child. What the parent says goes. It is a rigid approach to raising children that may have been most effective in times of great famine or toil. It was used most commonly in large, traditional families in which the father was the patriarch, and everyone else was called to follow his command. Times have changed greatly since. Doctors see a problem with this approach in modern times,it creates a distance between parent and child in which the child doubts the parent's love for him. It is based on punishment, which can easily create anger.
Darling and Steinberg (1993) have defined parenting styles as “a constellation of attitudes toward the child that are communicated to the child and that taken together, create an emotional climate in which the parent’s behaviors are expressed” (p. 488). In order to fully understand how these parenting practice influence behaviors and habits on academic performance or achievement you must understand the differences between the practices. In a more concise explanation, authoritarian practices are parents who are extremely strict, admire obedience, and discourage communication between the parent-child and express low levels of warmth. Authoritative practices are parents who have rules and boundaries, open communication between themselves and the child and have an equal balance of warmth for the child. Permissive practices are parents who are warm and loving, however have no rules and boundaries, in other words, these parent have no limits or expectations for their child. Uninvolved-neglecting practices are those parents who do not impose discipline or encouragement, these parents do not engage with their child. With these definitions in mind a parent can be any one or a mixture of
This paper will explore the strict parenting whether it has positive effects or negative effects on children. Before I begin my discussion, I want to ask you a question. How do you define an authoritarian parent? In response to this question, you can think about someone who has a complete control over his or her children. According to Kendra Cherry, the author of “What Is Authoritarian Parenting?”, she explains that, “Authoritarian Parenting is a style characterized by high demands and low responsiveness.” In this sentence, authoritarian parenting, also known as helicopter parenting, is parents who force their children to follow their needs without any explanations, so their children must be under their regulations even though children do not
In authoritarian styles of parenting the parent is very demanding, expecting the child to perform to the standards given. Some disadvantages are that the parent punishes without explaining why they need to not do that again and in the end no lesson is learned. This can cause the child never to learn what they should, or if they learn they become authoritarian just like their parents. The kids who go through this can develop psychological problems such as anxiety and depression faster and may develop self-esteem. A survey on authoritarian parenting was done and found that middle-aged Americans ...
